Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHONLooks like a museum, doesn't it? Or a church? Or some place of culture? Nope, got that all wrong. These beautiful arches belong to the National Australia Bank branch on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Collins Street. The tree branch was perfectly positioned to bring a little touch of nature to the concrete and glass.
Old bank buildings - esp main branches always had interesting architecture - now - steel and glass. As for the similarity to churches - well - many more people worship money than God.
ReplyDeleteAh…so the banks in Australia as in the U.S. have grand architecture. Perhaps they’re the only ones who can afford it.

ReplyDeleteThat's a nice one David. I like the way you caught a tree branch hanging down over the doors. It makes it seem less austere. The blue behind the lattice on one door is beautiful. I wonder why there isn't blue on the other door.
ReplyDeleteCorpus Christi, TX has some interesting architecture. I used to work downtown across from the only building that had gargoyles in the entire city. As noticed in earlier comments, it was a very old building.

In many places..I have noticed that old banks are housed in old buildings and they actually take the pain to preserve the architecture
