The Big Bank Theory

I'm Showing A Lot Of Interest In This

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Looks like a museum, doesn't it? Or a church? Or some place of culture? Nope, got that all wrong. These beautiful arches belong to the National Australia Bank branch on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Collins Street. The tree branch was perfectly positioned to bring a little touch of nature to the concrete and glass.

  1. Old bank buildings - esp main branches always had interesting architecture - now - steel and glass. As for the similarity to churches - well - many more people worship money than God.

  2. Ah…so the banks in Australia as in the U.S. have grand architecture. Perhaps they’re the only ones who can afford it.

  3. Hi Jeannie,

Yes, but we have a Gothic bank here in Melbourne - must photograph that for you.

And I enjoy photographing old churches....

    Keep smiling

  4. Hi Nick,

Not really. This one and the ANZ Gothic babk here in Melbourne are exceptions.

Mostly, the others are soulless glass-and-concrete blocks!

    Keep smiling

  6. That's a nice one David. I like the way you caught a tree branch hanging down over the doors. It makes it seem less austere. The blue behind the lattice on one door is beautiful. I wonder why there isn't blue on the other door.

Corpus Christi, TX has some interesting architecture. I used to work downtown across from the only building that had gargoyles in the entire city. As noticed in earlier comments, it was a very old building.

There is a link to yur blog among my friends. :) When you get the chance why not check out the American Photojournalist link under the Photography heading? I think you'd find it interesting.

    Peace!

  7. Interesting. The spelling perfection demon struck and I've discovered that I can delete a comment I left but not my identity. LOL...perhaps God is teaching me not to be such a perfectionist. :)

    Hope!

  8. Hi David,
Visiting your blog for the first time. You have interesting photography and also some funny news stories (the lawn order one is hilarious). Is authorblog a blog ring of all writers? Thank you for stopping by my site, the Miami daily photo...regarding your question, I did take a few verticals, but they didn't turn out, so I have only that horizontal.

  9. Another one of those surprising looking bank buildings.

When I posted a picture of a side door to ours, someone though it looked like a mausoleum! -grin-

Thank you for your good wishes, on our 49th Wedding Anniversary.

  12. In many places..I have noticed that old banks are housed in old buildings and they actually take the pain to preserve the architecture

  13. Tree branch and bank branch - I see a theme here ;-)

  14. Nice "double" effect, softened by the left door being a bit in shadow, and of course, by the tree branch.
