Back With The Blue-Rinse Set
Blue Smarties are to make a comeback - thanks to a colouring extracted from seaweed. They were dropped two years ago as part of a drive to rid the sweets of artificial colours, and were replaced by white Smarties. But now makers Nestle Rowntree have found a new blue colouring from a seaweed called spirulina. It means blue Smarties will now reappear in packs along with the seven other colours. The original blue Smarties were introduced in 1989, replacing the light brown variety.

ReplyDeleteI have to say, M&M's and Smarties, while simlar in concept, are nowhere near the same thing. I've Canadian friends south of the border who I regularly mail packages of Smarties to. I'm sure the reappearance of the muchly mourning blue smarties will cause much rejoicing.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love smarties. Teachers at college have brought them to the classroom for their hard working students. Smarties are those rolls of sugar candies. Don't think they are M&M's, those have chocolate centers and come in bags.
ReplyDeleteIn public school we can't give candy to the kids any more. It's deemed unhealthy and the snacks must be on a dietitian approved list.

I cant stand smarties, the chocolate in them is absolutely criminal. Plus you get that lovely multi coloured hand from holding them making you look like you have some sort of tropical disease.

ReplyDeleteThe blue smarties have already landed this side of the world! My 7yo bought a smarties easter egg pack the other day, and it had limited addition, blue smarties only in the tubes!

ReplyDeleteI used to take spirulina tablets - they're really good for you - perhaps I should eat blue smarties now - yummy!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Smarites!! When I lived in the U.K. I used to eat them all the time. Those and Minstrel Chocolates. They only sell them in speciality stores here in States and they jack up the price because of it!
ReplyDeleteOh! and Smarties for you guys are not the same Smarites for us. Our version of them are very small rolls of pure sugar candies wrapped in plastic celophane and Each roll is about the size of your finger.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the UK and we have Smarties and M&M's, the Smarties are bigger but crisp coated chocolate. What I have never seen are white Smarties, I think we kept the blue ones even though they had nasty additives in them!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Akelamalu--I used to take them too in capsule form--Smarties not only sound like a tastier alternative, they're a lot cheaper!
