Baby? What Baby?

Next Time, Give The Pubs A Wide Berth

A British woman who gave birth during a friend's hen night in Blackpool said she did not know she was pregnant. Ally Ashwell, from Newcastle, was touring the seaside town's pubs and clubs in a bumble-bee outfit, when she began to feel unwell. She returned to her hotel room, where the shocked 30-year-old found herself delivering her own baby.

  1. Okay, I've heard these tales before but I find it very hard to believe that any woman on the face of the earth can go 9 months and not once ever suspect that the flu she has been suffering from could possibly last that long or kick that hard...liar liar pants on fire...evidently!

  2. No, this was a dumb woman. How at that age can't you figure something is wrong here. Hello. Maybe she spent way too much time in those pubs. :)

  3. I find these stories hard to get my head round too.

  4. I also hear that they are about to find out what causes that? And it's not too many trips to the pub...well, it could be a side effect of one of those trips.

  5. Odd, very odd indeed...

What exactly is a hen party, anyway?

  7. I'm always skeptical of these stories as well. Someones trying to fool some folks, methinks.

  8. oh i know JUST how this chick feels. good bob, a few years ago i started getting really fat and just could not explain it. also, there was all this throwing up i'd done for months on end. it was really really weird! the last straw was when my legs swelled up like balloons. i thought surely i'd have to do something about it quite soon. then, one day, they rushed me to the hospital and i had a 9#11 baby. well imagine my shock! i had a holiday to spain planned. it well and truly wrecked that.

we've decided to keep the boy. i mean, we weren't doing anything with all that money *anyhow*...

  10. hahahaha! I mean, what? thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard! Did she think she had a massive stomach growth that moved? seriously? there's no way to not know! she must've been a large woman not to notice. seriously. thats ridiculous!

  11. Shock, and awe shucks, a baby! ;-)
Somehow I feel as if cheated by nature. I never had any doubt about being pregnant, every single day of the whole nine months, each and every time!

  12. i still don't know how these women can NOT know that they're pregnant. gee, did ya just think you were putting on pounds from eating too much? or maybe it's a beer belly from all the pub nights? i knew all three times i was pregnant WITHOUT the pregnancy test.

  13. I just don't buy it. How can you not know? I've heard of these kinds of stories before, but come on!
What do they make of the baby kicking? Elbows and knees poking out of their stomachs? The large, swollen belly? And all the other 100 signs. Just crazy!

  14. Now I am really stuck. Do I lean toward allegiance to being a North Easterner, where this girl is obviously drinking FAR too much, or toward now residing in the not too distant vicinity of Blackpool, where the girls come in their droves just to get off their faces (that's a journey from Newcastle to Blackpool of over 100 miles or 160 km).

    Hmmmm.

As for knowing you are pregnant, I do know one woman who genuinely did NOT know she was pregnant until she gave birth. Her children were grown up, her husband had been snipped (it obviously failed!) she put on some weight, but not a "bump", was not ill and did not know until admitted to hospital with "severe acute abdominal pain" whereupon she gave birth. True. Other than that, I agree with others - if she had all the symptoms, what is there not to know?

  16. I cannot for the life of me see how you could get to a full term pregnancy & not know. I think she must have been in complete denial. Something wrong somewhere.
I don't know about her, but it must have shocked every one else to see a bee giving birth!

  17. Itinerant Berthing???

Actually I worked with a girl who almost did that. She never got really large, just seemed to put on a little weight maybe, not even a stone. Never had regular periods so didn't catch on. She finally worked it out at nearly 8 months, told the boss in confidence - she was single - took two weeks holiday when the time came, adopted the baby out and was back at work - and NO-ONE knew. Honestly! Life can truly be stranger than fiction.

  18. A wide berth...that's good!

But maybe she was off her rocker a bit. After all, she was wearing a bumble bee costume. Weird.

Fortunately (or unfortunately), after all that beer, she probably got quite a buzz.

  19. Jennifer H's comments made me last.

I've been pregnant twice and I just don't know how people can be preg and not know it. It always amazes me.
    Maybe it was the buzzing?

  22. I have always known within days if I am pregnant (even when my youngest "surprise" came along), but I do know two people who didn't have a clue right up until the final month before delivery. Methinks the word denial springs to mind.

  23. Apparently she should pay more attention when she's being buzzed by a male bee!
