How Can Something So Right Be Sarong?

We were wandering down a street in Langkawi, Malaysia, when this sight stopped me in my tracks. It was just a tiny rack outside a shop on a long street, but my photography-radar-activation clicked into overdrive immediately.
I walked briskly away from the family (they’re used to me going walkabout) and I homed in on the sarongs. It wasn’t just the way they were displayed that caught my eye, it was the soft lines of the fabric and the striking range of colours.

Also, part of the attraction for me was the fact that there are so many sarongs hanging closely together. This gave me vertical lines to concentrate on, in addition to the delicate designs.
You want to know what I reckon? In the tropics, a sarong is definitely the fabric of society.

They are indeed colorful. I love your post title. Have a great day David. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school I had a friend whose father had traveled in India and she had some of the wardrobe to prove it. I'll never forget the exquisite sheer yellow sari she wore to our Christmas formal event. Those colors take me back to that time. Thanks for sharing them, David. Colorful fun shots!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
"...the fabric of society..."
ReplyDeleteI am groaning so often now my family think I am in pain.
Love the second shot - the vertical one.
Its been sarong since I shopped I better get a muu muu on

ReplyDeleteYou are so right, David! :-)
ReplyDeleteDavid: Just when you think you made a perfect capture with your camera it turns out to be Sarong. Oh well; show it anyways.
ReplyDelete"... Be Sarong?" Groan! Love it!
ReplyDeleteColor-full photos, too.:)
Ooh... good eye. LOVE the colors! And I think I like the vertical shot best.
ReplyDeleteHere we call them muumuus and they are accepted formal wear! (Well, depending on the design, of course.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors! And what a creative title! Love it!
ReplyDeleteNot sure why, but the last shot is my favourite.
ReplyDeleteI like how you capture what captures you. Wonderful colors!
ReplyDeleteI like the term "walkabout." Might have to borrow that one. :)

ReplyDeletethese shots would look great framed in my kitchen, by the way. i have some photos from a market in tunisia, that have similar colors (and similar theme, no?). they are giant baskets of various spices.
anyway, beautiful. per usual.
Can see that as a vibrant abstract...
ReplyDeleteHey, where'd your Nap Warden post go?
ReplyDeleteWell I got to see bright colors anyway :-)
It's the colors, no doubt! It made me want to dig out my beach sarong but that would entail going out to a shed and it's dark now. I love the red ones...and blue ones. They're all so lovely!

And here I thought by the post title that they were going to be surf boards. Had I said that, you'd have told me "I'm sari, sarong number"
