It was the day of the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009 - which claimed 173 deaths in Victoria, my home state.

Ironically, the sunrise that day had been amazing, and the sun's final salute before dipping across the horizon seemed to empathise with Victorians as we (slowly) began to realise the horror.

Eight days earlier, I had photographed a bushfire racing across a valley not far from where we live.david mcmahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18009095220051075552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20249225.post-61928289843800182002011-05-16T14:33:06.519+11:002011-05-16T14:33:06.519+11:00Hi David, Welcome back. If I ...Many thanks for those very kind words, Amy.

If I had to choose one shot, I'd say the one of the Opera House, because it was shot in ``non-photographic weather''.

It was a grey, dull evening, just before sunset. It had rained just before I took the shot. There was no dusk colour in the sky at all.

The sky was grey, the water was grey. Even those beautiful white-tiled arcs of the Opera House looked grey.

Then, as I sat waiting for a ferry, I took on the challenge of composing an image that embraced all that grey. So in terms of degree of difficulty, I'd say that would be the shot for which I really worked the hardest.

But it's the one of the didgeridoo dots that is my most-viewed image on Red Bubble. It has been viewed more than 1,800 times - almost three times as often as the shot of the chain and the Opera House.

Good luck with your photography. Just embrace the task, accept the fact that you will make mistakes, but that you will get better by leaps and bounds if you learn to be discerning about the quality of your work.

If ever I can help you (or indeed any blogger) in any way with advice, or a constructive critique, you know exactly where to find me!david mcmahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18009095220051075552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20249225.post-3415366950888151042011-05-16T13:38:14.757+11:002011-05-16T13:38:14.757+11:00Delighted, Thumbelina, that the Opera House shot i...Delighted, Thumbelina, that the Opera House shot is your choice.

Funny thing is, the most popular shot has had three times as many views as the one of the chain and the Opera House.

As of the weekend, the Opera House shot had about 650 views and the most-viewed image - the didgeridoos - has had more than 1,800 views.
