Purple Reign

Bloom Or Bust In The First Week Of Spring

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

These gazanias in our garden just look after themselves - and they're a riot of colour at the moment, as we enjoy the first week of spring. In the last fortnight of winter, gardens around the city are a riot of purple and orange, thanks to the hardy gazanias, which I think are also called "treasure flowers". This is an interesting shot, because you'll actually see a sheen on some of the petals on the right, almost giving them a plastic-like quality.

  6. What a marvelous time of year. You are so lucky that spring has greeted you such colors. Purple is my favorite!

As we head into fall and winter I look forward to sunny pictures from your neck of the woods. And you must not forget to tease us with all of the fresh fruits and vegetables of spring.

    All the best,
    Lindsay

  11. Beautiful flowers! I have these in flower still in purple, white and yellow (I call them osteospermums) and have managed to get them through our winter. Enjoy your Spring...things are cooling down here and the nights getting longer...our Autumn is definitely in the air.

  15. G'day Hammer,

It seems to be a fairly common colour here in Melbourne, although the bronze is the one you see everywhere - and that is so striking!

  20. G'day Dan,

I used to have a lavender bush near these gazanias - but I had to move it because there were so many bees dropping in!

  26. A "riot of colour". I wonder who first used that. And why did they pick "riot"?
