I went for a walk at lunchtime this afternoon and, as always, I had my camera with me. As you know, it's winter here in Australia and today was one of those dull, cloudy days when there are endless possibilities with a camera.
The Yarra River was a long ribbon of silver-grey and I wondered how I could possibly capture some of that in isolation. Then, as I walked across Princes Bridge I saw this ancient tree between Federation Square and the riverbank. Its glossy, dark burgundy foliage was the perfect foil for the rippling surface of the river.
This post is in response to Mama Geek and Cecily's new theme, Photo Story Friday. Pay them a visit and see how easy it is to take part. In Mama Geek's own words: "Post photo(s) that you took and simply tell the story behind it. Explain why you pressed the shutter button, what memory it invokes, what we don't know, why you love it or why you don't. Any subject."
Anything to do with photography, you can count me in ... even on a cold winter afternoon. Who said grey wasn't gorgeous?

That is one beautiful winter. I love how the leaves frame the water! Very exquisite. And thanks for playing PSF; you're a very much welcomed addition!
Hmm. What is it about a gray winter day that makes us long for walks and seeking out any beauty nature might have missed taking away from summer? Lovely entry, David. Mine is up, too. I think you'll like it.

Wonderful comments about a wintery shot. I love winter pictures in New Mexico even though a lot of people just think of the cold the brown, brown, and more brown color out there. Ice on the Rio Grande and the wonderful seed pods everywhere with maybe a touch of snow all make for wonderful images.
I really like your thoughts about that. :)
Gray IS gorgeous. Especially with burgundy.
I'll have to check this out...
I love the ocean all grey in the winter too.
So beautiful... I think I prefer gray days to sunny ones...
Mine is finally up at Prairie Visions!
I love the moody colours.. makes me want to bundle up.. even though it's a stifling 28C(82F) at the moment, with a humidex of 37C(99F) and rising. Beautiful photo!
Very peaceful image. The photostory posts sound like another of your great finds.
Not that I particularly want competition, but you might want to let your photography inclined visitors about this contest:

That water looks really cold, but the burgundy of the leaves is lovely against it.
Very nice.
It is gorgeous. I love the red and gray contrast. Really, really beautiful.
I'm so glad you are playing PSF with us!! I'm with MG- you are a very very welcome addition!
The tree is a beautiful offset for the river.
That shot is gorgeous. I love the deep red leaves against the grey water. Beautiful!
A wonderful wintry photo. Dullness also has its own beauty. Isn't it, David ??
I went to Cecily's blog & left a comment there as well. My photoblog depicts the same views as hers. Post a photo & write some thoughts on it. Have a look here & here. Knowing you, I think you are going to appreciate it.
I also happen to hold a similar thing on my photoblog but with a difference.
And now here I second Bart's words. You might want to let your photography inclined visitors about this contest:

You can get some of the most atmospheric pictures on cloudy days. For me, when it comes to photography, there are no bad days. :)
Yes, the two colours worked together beautifully. Another great shot from our man in Melbourne. Thanks for the "Post of the Day" award and for your kind & gracious comments!!! It was a hard one to write.
