Size This Up, If You Can

Last week, while I was in Dawson City at the invitation of Yukon Tourism, I dropped my luggage off at the Dawson City B&B on Craig Street, but I headed straight out again to take some shots of the unique Gold Rush city in the mellow late-evening sun.
As I left the B&B, I took note of the many varied blooms in the immaculately maintained garden and this one caught my eye because of its sheer size. I had to shoot it immediately and when I saw the owner later, I asked if it was a flowering cabbage.
Yes, she said, it was the bloom of sauerkraut - which I've never seen before. Then I figured the best way to give you an idea of perspective was to shoot it from a different angle, including a couple of petunias in the same frame (see below) so you could judge just how huge the lilac flowers are.

ReplyDeleteYes, cabbage can bloom really large--we grow them that way here in the Northweat--and you were about as NORTHwest as you could get. (Er, when I say we grow them that way here in the NW, I mean people do--can't take any personal credit for it.)
ReplyDeleteThat's one beautiful cabbage! Did you know you can make cabbage into Kimchi and that there are about three thousand different kinds of Kimchi? I was so LUCKY to get to watch a two hour documentary on how to prepare cabbage to make Kimchi while in flight to Korea. Now that was a one very informative film. (Yawn.)

ReplyDeleteI had no idea what this was at all.... you have a fantastic eye for a shot... but more than that it is the interest and the slightly out of the box subjects that you are a true mastr at showing... great post David.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I've seen flowering cabbage before, this is a particularly beautiful specimen. Who would ever have thought that the same sort of plant could become plain old cabbage *and* something like this.

ReplyDeleteHi David! Yes, as Katney says, we grow 'em BIG here in the North West - although she's in the USA and I'm north of her in Canada, as you know! But I digress...I was out at one of my regular haunts today taking shots of bulrushes. Will post them some day soon so you can see how I did. Am trying to get different perspectives.

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful example of what is known as ornamental cabbage. Technically it is edible but can get extremely bitter and when cooked the lovely leaves turn a dull gray.
I used to grow them in my flowerbed.

Your commenter before has beaten me to it. These ornamental cabbages are not uncommon on this side of the world but that is an especially fine example.

ReplyDeleteMay I note that Sauerkraut does not bloom? It is the cabbage plant that blooms, but not anymore after it has been shredded, salted and fermented into Sauerkraut. ;-)
That is beautiful. Unfortunately, the flowers I planted earlier in the summer had started to wilt and are struggling to keep up with the awful weather we are having. It is a delight to see this picture.

ReplyDeleteOrnamental cabbages they're called here ... but do they qualify as a flower? Do they have seeds or pods? Tomato is not a veggie but a fruit .. so what is an ornamental or Sauerkraut cabbage?

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Many of the homes around here have flowering cabbages in their gardens, but none look as healthy and colourful as this one. Lovely. And its size.. it beats the slaw of averages. ;)
