Yes, Australia is famous for its outdoors lifestyle and its barbecue culture. And yes, the days are getting longer again. The winter solstice was almost five weeks ago and the sun is rising earlier and setting later each day, despite the frost and the cold and the chilly winds.
But it’s time to check out the barbecues again. Any day is good for a barbie, as we call them here.
You don’t need an excuse to fire up the burners and toss some olive oil on a sizzling hot plate. But I’d better duck outdoors and check that the gas cylinder is full, before I light up each burner and get the gleaming utensils out again.
Keep 'em clean and keep 'em sharp. Now that’s what I call real cutting edge.

ReplyDeleteAny day is good for a barbie indeed. Mr. Jazz uses his barbie in winter too - even when it's 30 below (our winters are a touch cooler than yours)

ReplyDeleteI've always been torn between gas and charcoal. Gas is cleaner, and more convenient... but can you beat the flavor of a slab of whatever grilled over hot coals of wood?

i love doing bbq and its one of my fav but didnt know anything about the utensils... i know its stupid but what can i say... But after reading the post i am anxious to learn more ..

I love bbq in any season. Here we use charcoal and call it the Tandoor (the traditional ones), and the kebaabs on this tandoor are yummy, and unbeatable.

ReplyDeleteThose utensils look expensive. Gas vs. charcoal... I use both. Last year, it was mostly gas. This year, it's mostly charcoal.
ReplyDeleteRhyme? Utensils - "new pencils" - that's a rhyme. We Americans use the phrase "time to get out the barbie," and I think it must come from the movie, "Crocodile Dundee." Those yellowish-gold utensils are something else. Must they be kept in a locked safe when not in use? They're not gold, are they? - Jeanne in Oregon

Aren’t you lucky to be able to barbecue in winter? Ours gets buried in the snow. Those are some nice looking utensils. If the rain ever stops in Maine, my husband will be back at our grill too.

ReplyDeleteWow that's serious professional equipment! David, I love how you make a wonderful photograph out of everyday objects. My sister was impressed at a public park in Perth which had bbqs provided, you could just rock up and cook lunch - is that common thing?

Ah I'm so hopeless at choosing a photographic subject. Today is grey and drizzly 'Melbourne' weather and I did't do my usual photo walk. I never thought about going through the cutlery drawer! Now I just can't wait for the warmer weather and barbie season!
