Goodbye To Blogging

That’s All, Folks

Yes, blogging has been a great adventure. Yes, it was a thrill to get almost nine thousand page views in a single day. Yes, it was a great honour to be chosen as one of Google's Blogs Of Note.

Most of all, it was wonderful to be part of a vibrant, talented community.

But I’m going to be concentrating on my novels for a while. I'll still have a strong online presence and if you would like to keep an eye on my photographic essays, you can get twice-daily updates at my Red Bubble site.

Goodbye, good luck and God bless you all.

  12. Awww David. I hate to see you go, but understand your need to tend to other aspects of your life. Thank you SO much for all you've done to bring bloggers together with your POTD. I suspect your departure will spawn other inspired bloggers to start their own POTD. I might just consider that myself.

I'll miss you. Please do keep us posted occasionally. And best of luck to you, friend.

You know you haven't seen much of me lately, but you've often been in my thoughts and I always visit, even if I don't comment.
I hope your work with your writing is productive and I totally understand the need to take the time out!
I look forward to the new novel. Let us know here when it is out, and also drop in and let us know major stuff like major wedding anniversaries, the kids' achievements and the like - we care you know!

God bless you and thank you for all the help you have given and the joy of visiting here for something new every day (several times a day!)

  16. Thanks for all of your wonderful posts. I feel that I've learned quite a bit about blogging and other things from you in the six months that I've been blogging. I was fortunate to find your blog very early on.

In the future feel free to stop by and say hello, it would be an honor.

    Goodluck and God bless.

  32. What?
    Oh no, you mustn't.
Do I have to bring the rest of the Scandinavians and perform an intervention? (No matter that I'm making my poetry debut on October 10 and still don't have a finished text and should hear what you are saying.)

I never really knew what blogging was until a year ago and when I hear the words "Goodbye to blogging" it sounds like a suicide note, like something awful happened or at least like some sort of impossible typing mistake.

    Good luck though :)

  33. Honored to have had a mention on this site... Good luck and Peace!

  34. As you probably already know, all the letters in AUTHORBLOG can be rearranged to spell:

    Tough Labor
    Robot Laugh

Thank you David for your blog which was a labor of love, and for making us all laugh. Watch out for those orange sandstorms!

  35. You will certainly be missed. I have been concentrating on my novel writing and it is work that begs a lot of a time, attention and inspiration. So I understant.

  37. We'll all miss you, David! The only problem is that we can't get your books here in North America. I've been looking for your second one, but no luck. I'll keep an eye out on Red Bubble though and even if I have to come to Australia to get your books or have a visit with you again, I will. And don't forget, you and all the authorblogs will always be welcome here!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh David I am so, so sorry you are going but I do understand why you are leaving.

What are we going to do without you?

And you are featuring strongly in my "Wizard Of Oz" and I was going to help you rescue the whole of blogland from the evil clutches of an evil foe. I'll still complete it of course.

I'll follow Red Bubble but it would be nice if you could drop in to see us sometimes.

I sensed something was uo when I noticed POTD not appearing not as often.

Thank you for all you help and encouragement David - I really appreciate it.

    Very best wishes to you.

  40. Oh, and Post of the Day was inspired... made so many of us much closer as a result. x

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh David, though I am saddened, I truly understand you need to move on with other things. The time, encouragement and wonderful introductions you have selflessly given to us all over the past few years have been precious, indeed. You are responsible for drawing together a like-minded community of fellow bloggers, who would probably would never have had the opportunity to gather together, were it not for you.

For my own part, your faith and support has been invaluable. Thank you my friend, it truly is a pleasure to know you. I know you will find every success from whatever venture you tackle - I will be cheering you on all the way. x

  42. David,
You will be missed, bu me also. I loved your doors, and how you told the story of how your pictures were being made. Your post of the day. Being picked (more than once even) was such a great compliment and encouragement. You will be missed. God bless you, and thanks for your friendship.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Best wishes to you. I have enjoyed your blog tremendously, but I know that with your extreme talent you could be writing books to pass on for the next generations. I will be one of the regulars checking out Red Bubble.

  48. David,

I am more than sorry to see you go. I will miss you more than words can express! But as you once said to me, "More importantly, I understand." And I do. I loved your first novel, and will eagerly anticipate the next. And will certainly thoroughly revel in your photography on Red Bubble. But you are so much more than an extraordinarily talent writer and photographer...you are a genuine, authentic, compassionate and warm friend. And I will truly miss seeing you around here. Thank you for having extended your hand of friendship to me. I treasure it. You will be in my prayers. God bless you, your wife and daughers! With much respect, and warmest affection~ Janine

  49. Nooooo!

    Say it ain't so!

We've only just met! And I so look forward to your POTD picks!

Is that enough exclamation marks? because I have a whole lot more where those came from!!!

Thank you SO MUCH for visiting Casa Hice and leaving your footprints (and a coveted POTD mention) on my welcome mat. I will cherish it always.

Most of all, best wishes on your photography, literary endeavors and continued successes. I would hate to be greedy and stand in the way of your dreams, but I sure will miss you.

    Blessings and high fives!

  56. Oh, dear. No daily fix of McMahon?

I understand where you are coming from. I recently closed down a blog which was stressing me, and while on vacation touched not a single computer. Withdrawal symptoms!!! But it can be very freeing. Blogging can be time and energy consuming, and we must not let it take us over completely. There is life outside of blogging.

The best to you in your endeavors. Now I must really get my act together and get myself a copy of Vegemite Vindaloo. And I will follow you to Red Bubble. I hope that you might stop by once in a while and give us an update on what's happening at Casa McMahon. Thank you for all the encouragement you have given to all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Good luck David. I suspect that there is a life outside blogging.

You have encouraged me more than I can tell you.

If you ever travel to our part of world, please let us know.

I shall reactivate my Red Bubble

I wish you and yours all the best.

  77. Thanks so much for all your fun pics and posts you are such a wit and awesome photographer But most ofall thank you for your encouraging words and comments on my attempts :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm feeling just a little sad at the moment. You read so many blogs you won't remember this but when I first started blogging almost two years ago you left a comment on my blog that has served me well these two years into retirement. You read my profile where I stated it was time to pursue my dreams that had been put on hold for many years and you said to never put a dream on hold. I thank you for that caring thought. I have since taken up photography (one dream) and although I'm far from being anything but an amatuer it has been a most fulfilling pasttime.
Thank you too for naming my main blog twice in your POTD - that too meant a lot.
    Many wishes for continued success.
    Catch you on Red Bubble!

Thank your for that wonderful comment.

Writing is always fun. That's why it was so hard to make the decision to walk away from this blog ....

    VERY difficult!

Alas, I wish it wasn't so! BUt thank you for reading my work, thank you for commenting and thank you for your generous words.

    ReplyDelete
  92. WOW! totally not expected. I am sorry to see it, but believe in my heart that if this is where your heart is taking you...this is where you need to go. I have often wondered how you kept up with it all.

I want you to know how very much I have appreciated your kindness, and respectful way of carrying yourself. I admire you greatly, and know that you have given so many people the support they needed at just the right time.

There have been times recently that I have felt that letting my blog go for awhile would be a good thing. I haven't been blogging as much, and that has certainly helped.

I'll be seeing you on redbubble though. I'm not there as much as I would like, but once again....only so much time in the day.

    Take GREAT care of YOU!

  93. Hilary:

I've been such a huge admirer of your work from the first time you left a comment here and I followed the link and realised just how much talent you have for words and imagery.

You have been so richly blessed in talent.

Your blog is always a treasure chest, with sparkling diamonds.

The very best to you and your family. Maybe my travels will bring me to your part of the world one day ....

And if you are indeed serious about carrying on POTD, you're most welcome. You can even use the same logo, if you want.

    Just let me know ....

I was in shock when Sazzie told me, I still can't believe it. You have been here for so many of us who delight in your wit, your compassion, your unfailing encouragement and your amazing talents. Dear Sir Knight of the blogging quest, how I shall miss you.
I will ask Sazzie to put Red Bubble on my siebar so that I won't miss you if you come back for a visit.
Every good wish to you in your work and good health to you and your family.

Thank you for your very kind words. It's been a pleasure to read your work and I can honestly say that I've probably read 80-85 per cent of everything you've uploaded on your blog.

It was interesting to watch you emerge in BlogLand, to note your skill with words and your sheer class all round.

Saz has great genes! To me, you will always be the Queen Mum of blogging - precious to all and beloved by many.

You have my email address so you have immediate access to me at all times. You know I will answer, as I always do.

  99. Sarah Lulu:

Thank you for that wonderful salutation. I'm not disappearing entirely - just from active blogging.

My thanks for being here, for reading and for commenting!

I always enjoyed reading your creative responses to Verse And Worse. Funny you should mention that - because I still have a couple saved up and ready to post, should the need arise!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Oh crap! I'm thinking this is going to cause the need for an online support group to get us through the loss and grief of you!

I wish you the very best with your Novel(s). I will keep an eye out for you! Best wishes and God bless.

David you are going to be missed beyond words!

Thank you very much for all the support you have shown me. Good luck with your blog. It's a brave new world out there and you are one of the people who defines the way blogs must move to stay ahead of other media.

    Good luck ....

    ReplyDelete
  104. Pastor Sharon:

That really brought a huge smile to my face. Online support group? It exists already - it's called the blogging fraternity.

When I first started blogging, there were some tentative writers out there. Now they are people who are comfortable with their literary skills and the freedom to express them in any way they so desire.

It's been a pleasure reading your work and I wish you God's blessings in everything that you, your family and your loved ones do and continue to do.

    ReplyDelete
  105. COREY:

You, ma'am, have an amazing talent. From the first time I saw your photography, I was struck by what you see and what you convey.

I've told you this before, in private as well as in a public forum. You have it, in spades.

You will (YOU WILL!!!!) be your own photographer one day, simply because you have so much depth and range and because viewpoints snap in your head the way they are supposed to.

Your earliest inspiration has been SugarBear, and as you know I have always encouraged you to work with wider subjects. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to see you do just that, and no surprise at all to see just how good you are, even when you explore new fields.

Ma'am, you have it all .... I salute you.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Oh my gosh! Well, best of luck with your novels, David, and thanks so much for all of the encouragement you've sent my way. I wish you every continued success!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Fireblossom:

You need no encouragement. You are so very talented, not just in my eyes but in the eyes of the many people who avidly follow your work.

Blogging is a great platform for you to showcase your skills.

I'll always be here for anyone who wants help or advice of any kind - but you KNOW that!

    ReplyDelete
  108. David, I am sorry to read this but totally understand, I also have other writing projects that ought to get the attention I give to my blog!

I wish you all the best and will be sure to follow you on Red Bubble.

  109. Thumbelina:

It's been great fun following your writing and then your photography and talking about what camera you should start using.

It was interesting watching your progress on your first blog and then on your second as well.

Tell your budding young photographer that I am only an email address away if ever any advice is needed, but I guess you knew that already!

Glad your family holiday was so memorable and that you were able to catch up with Terry and Maria.

Have fun - and you know where to find me!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Brit Gal Sarah:

Thank you for those kind words. It has been a lot of fun following your adventures in the US of A and I'd love to see them woven into a book one day.

It was a pleasure being able to honour your blog on POTD. You have a great blog and you have a vibrant style.

It would be wonderful to see you on RedBubble!

  112. As they say in Georgia...You're a peach! You will be missed by many.

  113. David - go do what your heart tells you to do. Look after David instead of looking after us.

Blogging and writing don't seem to go too much in hand. Especially when you do the amount of research you do to post every single day. How could you ever find time to write in all of that?

I for one have grown to consider you like my brother (who has the same name). I've been honoured time and again with being selected as POTD. That always made me feel special. Thank you for that David.

You know I loved Vegemite Vindaloo. I look forward to your next novel and THIS time I'm getting a signed copy!

    I'll be thinking of you.....

  114. DOT:

Thank you for the ultimate Georgia accolade.

I'll never forget taking part in the first Sky Watch Friday that you created. I'll never forget telling you it was a great meme because it was based on a premise that embraced all bloggers, everywhere.

Your photography has always been great fun to watch and you bring us a part of the world that we can admire vicariously, through your lens.

    ReplyDelete
  115. AIMS:

I'm deeply honoured to be thought of as your brother.

You have a searing ability with words, as I've said from the very first day I came across your Big Blue Barn site.

You write so well because you write instinctively. When (not IF) you write that first book, you won't need heavy editing.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Vegemite Vindaloo and I hope you enjoy the next one which will be out shortly.

It's been a pleasure to feature you so often on POTD.

More strength to your writing (not that you need it) .....

    David,

I feel like a really great neighbor is moving far away. I can honestly say, I hate to see your blog go! How can I remove your link from list? You have been a great encourager to me as I have attempted to write!

I will look for your new site and of course, I wish you, Mrs. Authorblog, and the Authorblogets all the wonder the world has to offer. Best wishes on your new ventures and on your books!

    Happy travels to you all!

  119. David, I feel really sad reading this.
I feel as though I've come in at the end of the party, just as people (you) are going home. Could say story of my life, but that's not actually true.
I've enjoyed your blog very much-particularly your photography. The most important thing I learned from you is to look around.I will follow on Red Bubble.
My one consolation is that I got a POTD mention, so I'll hang onto that.
Now a little Irish wish for you:"go n-eĂri an bĂ³thar leat". All the best to you and the Authorblog family, and thanks for sharing your many talents with the blog community.

Well, I am sorry to see you go but I must admit in the last week I have thought about hanging up my keyboard as well. I'm too busy, it's become too much like work, I feel guilty when I don't blog, it's time for a change, I spend too much time on the internet when I should be taking better care of myself, etc, etc.

Best wishes David and it sure sounds like you'll be missed.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Oh, I am so sad to see you go, BUT good luck with everything!!!!

The great thing about blogging is that creatively speaking, it's two-way traffic. If you feel you learned something from me, then it's equally true that I learned just as much from you and other bloggers. That's the beauty of a creative environment. Thank you for your kind words and your good wishes.

  149. I have enjoyed your photography and posts, sometimes lurking, sometimes commenting.

Blogging fits our lifestyle, perhaps for awhile.

In my opinion and many of my readers we impose too much on ourselves to produce when there is nothing to produce. I have removed those impositions. When I have a story to tell, or something to share I take as much time as I need to develop it.

I keep a list of titles as drafts. Some never see the light of day. Others are stories in the making. Others have made it to post.

I enjoy reading, maybe more than writing. I have a number of readers who are writers of some note, who blog infrequently, but read daily.

The very best of luck in your novel writing.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Well shoot... it seems like I found you only to lose you. But books are important and I can certainly understand needing more time to focus on them. Good luck David. I'll still be following your photography. This has been fun. Thank you for that.

I makes me happy, though, thinking that you are out there following your dreams - may they all come true!

Many heartfelt thanks for everything and see you at Red Bubble!

  161. BEE:

Thank you for your kindness. I actually had things auto-posted about 6-7 days in advance, but decided to stop simply because I no longer had time to visit OTHER people's blogs, which is such a vital part of blog interaction.

  162. JAZZ:

Thank you on both counts, ma'am. I'm chuffed that you enjoy my sense of humour - and my photography! Now if you'll excuse me, I'll puff my chest out, walk down to the milliner and order a larger size in hats! You can, however, sill keep abreast of my daily photography at Red Bubble - and yes, there is still a lot of humour on my work there!

  164. ELLEN ABBOTT:

Thank you to you (and the graceful flamingo that is part of your avatar!) for your generous words. I guess it's just the fact that I could no longer find the time for a) POTD and b) visiting other bloggers. Without that vital element of interaction, my reasons for continuing to blog would have been purely selfish - and that's not me!

    ReplyDelete
  165. GAELYN:

Thank you for your kind and wise words. Blogging wasn't taking up a huge part of my life, but I just found that I no longer had time to visit, assess and recognise the work of other bloggers. And I guess I didn't want selfish reasons to be the key fact in continuing to blog. Thank you, once again, for your good wishes.

  166. SANDY KESSLER:

I love the fact that you mention my work ``beams you up''. That's a serious tribute, and one I will cherish.

We've been accustomed to each other's work for a long time now - and you know I am a fan of what you do. Walking away from blogging was not an easy decision, but it was all about putting other people's work at the forefront and I no longer had time to do that, alas.

  175. David,

You make me feel so proud to be an Australian ~ connected with you by default, so to speak! But just like so many others, I did not find you till precisely Anzac Day 2009 when my post was mentioned for POTD! At the time, I didn't even know what it was all about until some people from your blog mentioned it!

And then I explored your blog world and was totally enchanted!

Just thank you for being all you are and letting the world glimpse a little of your inner journeys!

Happiness always to you and your family!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Say it so Joe! Say it ain't so! Seriously, I will be keeping check on your Red Bubble page. You are always an inspiration - to so many.

I appreciate your support and encouragement in the last two years as I stretched my wings in a new way through blogging and photography.

I had to take time to concentrate on other things in recent months but I have missed regular blogging and I'm just getting back into the groove again.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the success of your book in the future.

Thank you again, David. You have blessed so many, I pray God continues to bless you!

Understand you need some changes, but as Hazel why not use the blog to inform us about your working process. Drop all your usual memes, but don´t disappear -please.
Will miss you, and nominate your last post as PotD, or post of the year on the sad side.

  179. Hi David,

This is most unexpected for me who had herself reduced blogging from writing to just reading & commenting (some times.) And reading always meant Authorblog first. Your blog is on my Bookmarks list so I could read it even without logging on to blogspot.com.

I was lucky that you read my modest posts as well as being POTD. When that happened to me, I had concluded that I had "arrived" in Blogsphere in true sense. Had it not been for you I would never have so many friends who read my posts. I now have a full fledged Blogfamily - all because of you. You have been a real source of encouragement to all new bloggers, including me.
I have often smiled on early mornings 'inspite of many sombre moods' while reading your humorous verses. I will miss it the most.

Here's a request - stay with us via a weekly/occasional post at least.

In fact I have been drafting an interactive post about the story of a huge movie, and I have cast you as the CEO of the project. Please tell me you will take some time (from novel writing) to look at it from time to time. Coz I will never find any one to replace you there.

My very best wishes to you and your family and to you for taking on full time writing. May you win all the laurels and Man Booker awards for you work.

Should you decide to post occasionally, all of us at Blogsphere would be very glad, indeed.

When your writing/photography travails bring you to India - Poona, pls honour me with your visit. I would love to meet you in person.

Many many thanks for your being who you are. And Good Luck!

That is the selfish me talking. I do understand, just don't like it.
I have been a lurker so I really don't have a voice. #184 comment doesn't carry much weight.
However, best of success with your book and do let us know when it will be available for purchase.
Will keep an eye on the Bubble.
Thank you for some really great reading and viewing. You have given a bunch of us a real boost with your POTD. Thank you big time.

You will be missed more than any blog ever but I understand well how hard it is to "write" and blog. I often think this blog time should be spent on my book. Please keep me informed to your book progress as I hope to be at least ONE of the first to buy and read it??
God Bless You David for all the smiles you have brought to all our faces!! xoxo :)

  193. Amazingly brave of you, David, to step away from blogging when its so deeply part of your routine. I take change in several small steps and then one giant leap!

I thought the "Goodbye to Blogging" title was a little trick when it showed up on my blog roll-a play on words or something. I'm surprised that you were sincerely making the decision to leave your highly successful blog project.

I have admired your posting routine, photos, and the way you lifted others up each week with your blog interview features and post of the day.

Thank you so much for recognizing Oasis Writing Link with your POTD awards. You brightened my blog, my day, and my heart.
