Dawn Syndrome

Just A Simple Salute To Nature's Power

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Early on Wednesday morning, I looked through the kitchen window to see whether I needed to take my umbrella to work. To my delight, I saw a tinge of pink in the east. It didn’t solve the problem of whether it would rain or not, but I knew I had to keep an eye on the colours.

There was a strong breeze, so I knew either of two things would happen just before the sun rose. Either the colour was dissipate very quickly as the cloud cover broke up, or it would rapidly intensify.

My camera is always within arm’s reach, so I took it into the garden and shot this series of frames. There was not more than two minutes between the first shot and the last - and a minute after I went back indoors, the colours had vanished completely.

Nature paints some amazing images for us early risers, but even then we have to react quickly to capture them.

  2. Very nice, I don't often see the dawn, so I have to rely on people like you who get up earlier than I do!

  3. Absolutely breathtaking.

  4. Our desert dawns here are stunning too, David, but I don't believe I have the camera skill to capture them the way you do. Also, I reach for the caffeine before the camera.

Oh, for a camera that would make good pictures AND coffee.

  5. What a wonderful series you captured! The morning sky is beautiful and I am glad you captured it for us to enjoy as well. My SW won't be up for a while yet as it is still mid afternoon on Thursday here!

  6. From the first glimpse of those dark swirling purples to Merisi's opening song lyrics these images are special. For me they brought to mind the words of old song about sundown and love. I wonder if its author was a photographer too. He was certainly an artist. When I was young, I thought this song was a love song. It is but nowadays I think it was to God.

In the chilly hours and minutes of uncertainty I want to be
In the warm hold of your loving mind
To feel you all around me and to take your hand along the sand
Ah but I may as well try and catch the wind
When sundown pales the sky I want to hide a while behind your smile
And everywhere I'd look your eyes I'd find
For me to love you now t'would be the sweetest thing t'would make me sing
Ah but I may as well try and catch the wind
When rain has hung the leaves with tears I want you near to kill my fears
To help me leave all my blues behind
Standing in your heart is where I want to be and long to be
Ah but I may as well try and catch the wind
Ah but I may as well try and catch the wind

Love those word images as much as I love your photographs.

    Peace!
    Lee

  16. Perfect catch for SWF! In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then beleive them to be true. Mine’s up too hope you can drop by… Happy SWF!
