Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON I took this shot during a ten-day visit to Calcutta late last year. This is the Corporation building, behind the New Market. It dates back to the era of British India and I was delighted to see that the building had been painted and tastefully illuminated with floodlights. It is always a pleasure to go back to the city where I was born and to see the many improvements that are being carried out. This is a great example. Once a nondescript building, it is perfect proof of the renewal of civic pride. I have wonderful memories of this historic city, so it's no surprise that the first half of my bestselling novel, Vegemite Vindaloo, published by Penguin Books India, is based here. It helps if you write about things you genuinely love.
