Abridged Version

Someone's Been Keepin' Me In The Dark Again

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

As you know, I always take my camera everywhere. So when I saw these jewel-like reflections on the surface of the Yarra River, I was able to take a photograph immediately. This is not the best view of the Melbourne skyline, and you have to strain your eyes to see the Swan Street bridge spanning one end of this frame to the other - but it's just a "different" view of the city I live in.

To achieve this effect, I didn't shoot it in "panorama" mode; I just shot the whole scene and then cropped out the sky and the river to concentrate on the lights. I never crop my images or modify them in any way, but this was one time I felt it was warranted. As for the deep purple tinge to the sky, that's fairly normal here in Melbourne at this time of year.

Lovely view, David! I think the cropping helped. :) This shot reminds me of the San Antonio Riverwalk at Christmas time. There's a really good shot of it at the bottom of this page.

Cheers

It's a great picture! I have never bee in Melbourne. I was several times in Sydney and I always go to Cairns, Cooktown and surroundings. I always visit the Aboriginal relatives of my daughter's first husband. They regard me as their relative.

Definitely warranted...so striking. I could get so lost in thought staring at a scene like that.

I'm finally caught up! Spent just shy of an hour reading through all your loveliness here. Have missed reading and am so grateful life is finally balancing out. Somewhat.

Cheers!
Kimberly

That reminds me of just about all I've seen of Bahrain... watergardens reflecting glass-and-steel buildings in shimmery skies... yumyumm!!

Wow, that is totally cool...good call on the cropping!

Next time the family and I are in your neck of the woods, we will be looking for some good pizza;)

Beautiful, reminds me being on the boardwalk area in Shanghai at night looking across the waterway towards Pudong with that space needle looking building.

David, you are a natural wonder! The only pictures I would NOT post-edit are the ugly "before" pictures. But everything else gets a little something. When I grow up, I want to be... YOU!

There's something about this photo that I really love, maybe it's the reflecting lights. Either way it's beautiful!

This is beautiful David, and I am relieved to meet someone else who doesn't normally modify photos. I don't like to modify my photos (I have my own personal preferences and opinions). My husband is a very strong believer in PhotoShop. I love PhotoShop and think it is an absolutely wonderful program, but my husband and my opinions about its use tend to differ ;-) OK, I'll quit rambling now LOL.

Two of my favorite style photos...Cities at night(especially black and white), and rural towns during the daylight hours(sepia or b&w)....

Good Stuff Dave.
