Ear, There And Everywhere
Residents of the US town of Farmington in Maine have donned earmuffs in honour of the man who invented the furry, wire-clad contraption. Chester Greenwood was 15 when he came up with the idea in 1873, frustrated by the choice of wearing a bulky scarf or having cold ears while ice skating.

I heard that on NPR this morning. I was quite convinced that they were older but apparently not.
Cheers
Alternate Footnote:
A large crowd also turned out to celebrate Chester Greenwood's second invention, mouth-muffs. Too bad nobody could hear their spirited chanting...It was muffled...

Hi Maddy,
Yep, I'm with you. I would have thought they dated back to Victorian times, or the Crimean War.

And no one could hear the critics mouthing off, either!
My day would not be complete without your Alternative Footnotes!
