Gaffe Station

It Was Comedy, But No One's Laughing

Not even George Bush’s gaffe today - calling the Sydney summit OPEC instead of APEC - could derail this story. There’s a lot of comedians in politics, but no one ever thought a tongue-in-cheek gag by a TV comedy team would embarrass the $250 million invested in security for the APEC summit in Sydney.

Members of an Australian TV comedy show, one dressed as Osama bin Laden, drove a Canadian-flagged fake "motorcade" through two security checkpoints in Sydney yesterday, before stopping of their own accord near the hotel where US President George W. Bush is staying.

Police arrested 11 cast and crew from the TV program, The Chaser’s War on Everything and impounded three vehicles, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, which airs the show, said on its website. The group wore fake security tags that bore the words ``Insecurity’’ clearly emblazoned across them.

Eleven people were charged under new laws passed a month ago with entering a restricted APEC area. Each faces a potential six-month jail sentence. For more details and photographs, go to Herald Sun.

G Bush also said "We're kicking ass" with regard to Iraq...now that was funny, I'm sure you'll agree:-)

George Bush has gone beyond funny, he is just frightening now! Can't they take him on a tour of dallas or something? You know, in a convertable...

Oooooooo I'm going straight to hell for that one!

BTW, there's a question up on my Creating A Likeness site today. Why not have a go?!

Ha, Thats funny. My partner sent me the story from her work yesterday and I had a giggle. It's all the more sweet when it involves straight-lace officialdom.

Bush does provide us with some memorable comments.
About the motorcade, I think it's unfair that the funny guys get punished for showcasing poor security. In fact they should be thanked for pointing out obvious flaws in the arrangements.

It was a great prank.

But who in the heck spends a quarter of a billion dollars on security? Wouldn't video conferencing work just as well?

Those "Insecurity" guys deserve a medal and the people responsible for the security breaches ought to be taken to the cleaners (in an armoured car, if that makes them feel less insecure). ;-)

I must have a weird sense of humour but I thought it was hysterical. Especially seeing the police arresting Osama bin Laden. I think the police were highly embarrassed!!

Life up here is quiet - I need a bit of excitement - even if it is the Australian News Bulletins
