Like any city built on a river, Melbourne is a metropolis of bridges. I was walking across Southbank on a recent afternoon when I noticed this reflection (above) in the mirror of a parked motorcycle. The image shows the ornate, distinctive lamps that are part of the architecture of Princes Bridge. And then I thought I'd photograph the lamps themselves, to give you a view of da Real McCoy. Perfect day for it, because there was not a cloud in the sky.

Great shots, both of them!
love the framing in the mirror
What lovely lamps! I hope to see them-and all of Australia-in person one day, but lugging a three year old across another continent isn't so appealing to me right now!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm quite a fan of Jo also. Now I'm off to locate a copy of your book -
Beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.
How clever of you to take the photo thru' the mirror!:))
I once clicked road signs showing opposite roads in Nashville which said "Church Street" and "Gay Street" and posted it too!!:P

Amazing the difference between the two - makes me wonder if I can trust my mirror.
And have I mentioned? I love your creative post titles!
Friend, where do you find all these shots? You have an amazing eye!
Beautiful shots David! I have been mia this week, apologies...but it is nice to be back and I just loved these photos!
Those are lovely pictures of lamps. I have looked for outdoor almps just yesterday...I saw one similar to that one in the picture.
Very nice, we just don't see that kind of ornament around here.
Just beautiful! We don't have anything that gorgeous over here. Thank you for sharing with us!
Beautiful, Victorian era type stuff. Cool legacy of the old days.
Thank you the humorful comments that bring a smile to my face. You have a great sense of humor, and a very nice blog.
My daughter did a project about your country and I have to say it was quite interesting.
I'd like to compliment you on your eye for detail. And once again, another nice reflective shot.

G'day Blue Momma
And welcome to my little slice of e-Australia! Must say this is a very kid-friendly continent.
You're off to find my book? That's the nicest thing I've heard today - and I hear lots and lots of nice things every day.

I don't think I mentioned it in my post but my good friend Magda who just visited me is from Melbourne.
Hi Craver,
They're just everywhere. I just stop and photograph them, but 99 out of 100 people walk straight past them without noticing ....

Hi Midas,
Thank you. I'd love to see a shot of the lamps you saw. The ones here on Princes Bridge are huge - they'd be about four or five metres tall at least.

G'day FHB,
You're right. And Calcutta, being an old English city, is pretty much the same.
