The Right Stuff, Er, Stiff

This Hooch Has Real Body

Two South African men have been arrested for going on a drinking spree in a stolen hearse - with a body in the back. The men were caught in Soweto after the hearse ran out of petrol. They had asked three women they had met at a "drinking den" to help push the hearse, but the women reported it to the police instead.

Hi Dave,

I'm looking at buying a camera, and wondered if you would have any ideas on a <$AU700 semi-pro camera?

The two I am choosing between right now are the Fujifilm S9600 and the Panasonic DMC-FZ50. I'm looking for both manual features and great image quality (of course!)

Thank you for your time,

David

G'day David,

Haven't used either of those. My best advice would be to go to a Ted's Camera Store or a specialist camera store, rather than a Big W or such retailer. Ask them if you can spend a coupla hours testing each camera, before you choose one to buy.

Mate, even if you have to pay a (refundable) deposit to do so, it's money well spent ....

That way you get the camera you REALLY like, rather than going on other factors and other people's opinions.

And if you're looking to spend that sort of cash, you're within range of buying the Pentax K100D - which is the camera I use, which is also video-enabled and is a stunning piece of equipment.

Get back to me as soon as you can .... and we'll work thru this one.

Don't stress. If we approach this logically, it's an easy choice.

Waiting to hear from ya ...

Cheers

David

G'Day again,

Thanks for getting back to me on this one.

I checked out the Pentak K100D online, and it looks quite good except for the megapixel count. The fixed-lens cameras I am looking at mostly have >9MP. How do you find the 6.1MP goes with printing, desktop displays etc.?

Also, I'm not sure if I'd really like to go for an SLR at this stage. Some of the fixed-lens cameras I have looked at have excellent zoom capabilities, zoom ring, focus ring, and pretty much all of the features of an SLR but without the lens-changing and dust problems. Plus, the two cameras I mentioned before have RAW recording capabilities.

The other concern I have with an SLR is the price of additional lenses - do you find this is a problem?

I did have a quick test of some cheaper Fujifilm models in the shop, but I'll have to go back again to check out these new cameras. Do you have any ideas for what to look for when testing?

Sorry if this is a burden on you, if it is just tell me, I know I am asking a lot of questions! :D

Thanks again,

David

Hi David,

I don't hav a drama with 6MP, but I understand yoour point about a fixed lens.

In answer to your other question, I use a Sigma 18-125mm bayonet lens, so it's one lens for everything. No need to swap. It is an awesome camera.

See yoour point. Don't get rushed into a choice - I'd really like to see you shoot the same scenes on each camera and compare the results.

Try shooting a) signs to test clarity, b) little accessories in display windows of the camera shop to test macro, c) outdoor scenes to test landscape mode, d) facial shots to test portrait mode.

Then compare the results, but it's also which camera you're most comfortable with.

Keep smiling

David

Hi Jules,

That's a wonderful rejoinder. Wish I'd thought of that line!

The new camera sounds great. Bet you can't wait to grab it.

Glad you liked the sun and moon shot.

Keep smiling

G'day Fishman,

Thanks for visiting, mate. I can think of a few other places where they'd nick a hearse!

There is also the famous South African story of the family driving along on one of the long stretches of open road here, when Granny had a heart attack and died. They bundled her in a blanket and tied her onto the roofrack because the kids were freaked out riding in the back with her. When they got to Bloemfontein they went into the police station to report the death, and the car was stolen....I get a real kick out of visualising the theives faces when they gleefully unwrap that blanket expecting some extra plunder...hee hee

G'Day Dave,

Thanks for your continued advice with the camera. I have decided on the Fujifilm S9600 - it's 9MP with 10.7x zoom, and has pretty much all the features of an SLR.

From my test shots it performs well in all lighting conditions, with ISO settings up to 1600. It also has 1cm macro support, hotshoe for flash & a 35mm screw for additional lenses (if I can find the money to buy one!)

Thanks for your help. In case your interested, I'll be posting a few photos from the new camera online soon, and I'll try to write a review of it after using it for a while.

See you later,

David
