Yes, a tripod is a great accessory to have, but you can still experiment if you don't have one, or if you've forgotten to bring it along with you. With floodlights and neon lighting on every street corner, there are great picture opportunities everywhere. This was taken in total darkness, and shows part of the wonderful Arts Centre here in Melbourne. Strong colours always attract me, as you can tell. So even in inky blackness, if you don't have a tripod, you still have a leg to stand on!

A trick when taking photos at night is to find something to lean your camera against or on to avoid the shudders. I use street lights and the tops of things. Another trick is to use time delay if you can - it will reduce any vibrations caused when you actually press the button to take the photo (and believe me this does cause shakes in low-light situations).
Just my two-cents.
You can see a sample photo that I took using the above technique.
Once we got our digital camera, I wanted a tripod in the worst way. So I googled camera tripods and eventually worked my way to a web site (PC World, or some such) that promised a review of all the best tripods available. What I read was all the different things wrong with this and that manufacturers products. It scared me so much (if I pay money for something, it had better work) that I still haven't bought one.
Google really should keep those kinds of articles away from me.
Today I use the old system as Ozlady mentioned. Lean it against something if you can.
What a facinating shot, David. That eye of yours is worth a thousand tripods..
Hi David,
We all pray and watch and hope for her safe return. No child should go through this and no parents should suffer this torture.
Our prayers are with the McCann fammily.
David
Hi Ozlady,
I have a lot of journo friends who liketo get into the bottled stuff - and have to hold on to street lights on their way home.... even when they're not using cameras!
But you're right - it's a great trick. Will check out your sho shortly.
Cheers
David
Hi Catmoves,
It's a bit like that old song (and what a great song it was) `Come On, I Lean', oh all right, it was `Come On, Eileen'.
You and me too - Google should keep those gizmos away from us, hey!
Cheers
David
Hi Shrink,
Thank you for your kind words. But these sights just seem to pop up wherever I am.
Yes, I've always been a bit one-eyed about photography.
You keep smiling now, you holiday-maker, you!
Cheers
David
