Olympic Meddle

Ring, Ring. Hullo, Who’s Dare?

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Rings a bell, doesn’t it? These are called butt-end reels in the newspaper trade. I saw three of them lying around near a printer and realised if I added two more from around the corner, I’d have the Olympic rings. Clearly an example of me moving my, er, butt. And if you’ll allow me to twist Baron Pierre Baron de Coubertin’s original Latin motto for the Olympic Games (``Citius, Altius, Fortius’’ – or ``faster, higher, stronger’’) this shot is a case of ``Citius, Altius, Fortuitous’’.

David, who took Latin "O" level, then? If I didn't know you better, I'd say you were showing off, some.. perish the thought!

Also "Expesivius"... assuming anyone round here has any idea of what £20BN and more is in real money... what's the latin for "eye-wateringly"..? and "unnecessary" and "oh nooooo"?

Nice picture though. Bet that didn't cost £20BN.

ExpeNsivius, sorry. Expensive.

Maybe Sydney will win next time...

David,
These leftover newspaper rolls are the best! My mom used to sell advertising for a newspaper and she'd bring these home for the grandkids to color and make murals. I still have one leftover roll in the boys' closet. Maybe I'll have to bring it out with some markers on the next rainy day.

Hi Carol,

Ah, Caesar, I do but understand a few words, thanks to my erudite mother who was fluent in Latin and French.

She would be most impressed to know I could pun in Latin!

Cheers

Hi Chertiozhnik,

I sorta knew what you meant! It'd be great if Sydney hosted them again.

Hi Debbie,

Yes, they are so multi-functional. They are great rainy-day therapy.

Okay, here's some serious advice from me (for a change) - I'd like to see you move your blog up a gear. Do you have a camera - I'd like to see some real-size shots on your pages.

Why? Because you write so well, that I'd like to see one more element of strength added to your site.

Think about it ....

Cheers

Hey David,

Nice blogging you've got here. Great pictures, context, and humor. It all goes done well like a overstuffed goat on a warm night. :)

We've met before haven't we?

Hi Nikhil,

Yes, your name is very familiar - do you sometimes answer questions (as I do one or two days each month) at the Blogger Help Group?

Really glad you like this blog and the mix that I project. I do have fun with it and I enjoy being able to advise other bloggers on the basis of my experience as a career journalist.

Hope to see you back here again

Cheers

Hi Debbie,

You do make me laugh. Yes, it's a bit like a school assignment.

But I want your blog to evolve, to project another element to its `personality'.

Your blog layout is always so neat, so well structured around such gifted and engaging writing - and yet I'd like to see it `grow'. You have many talents to engage your loyal readers, but this is what I said to a couple of others this week ...

Good bloggers create their niche and stay comfortable within it. But, ah, the GREAT bloggers keep experimenting with format, style and presentation.

Not every experiment works but we need to keep pushing the boundaries. Those that do so in the most effective manner will inspire others in turn.

Blogging is not a static medium. Anyone who reads your blog would know that. We know ust how well you write. But chuck it into overdrive now.

Start posting pictures on your blog, with one or two lines of caption. Like - here's the Big Boy that DH wishes he could knock off next. Have fun with photographs. I'm not saying my way is the best way. I'm just saying if you are willing to try it, who knows where your limits are ...

Cheers

David

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for being so gracious - and for not telling me to stick my head in a garbage dump full of cow magnets!
