Once In A Red Moon

The Lunar Eclipse, Through Cloud Cover

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

A disappointing night, because my view of the eclipse here in Melbourne was almost totally obscured by cloud. But here are some shots anyway. The reddish hue is striking, even though the sharpness of the image was ruined by the low cloud that persisted right through ....

Darn those clouds!! You captured it, nonetheless, far more than most of us would have been able to do.

I tried taking some pics, but the clouds confused my camera and it didn't know where to focus. I might have gotten some just like this, but I haven't downloaded them from the camera yet, because I wasn't thrilled. I'll have to check and see.

It was cloudy all day here before the eclipse... and a few times we had heavy rain. Maybe it was the heavy rain around 5-6pm that did the trick though and cleared the skies. Our view of the 'proper action' started just before 9pm, and almost miraculously, the last vestiges of cloud cleared from around the moon. We had the clearest imaginable view of the moon going into eclipse, then of its globe just hanging 'lightless' in the sky, then of the glow emerging again on the bottom edge. A memory to treasure.

Hi David..

Lunar eclipse: I set my alarm for 5 am, and went out sleepily with my camera, but it was so cloudy I did not see anything! I could not find it as well... I was walking the deserted streets (everyone was fast asleep, I was probably the only living soul awake on our street!) At least you caught some pix!

It has been hard getting back into rhythm after being away for almost a month, and I have not been posting regularly yet. It shall come.... I hope you guys still come and visit!!

cheers,
Cecilia
