Square Route

Biggest Draughts Board I've Ever Seen

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

While geometry never really held a major fascination for me in school, geometrical shapes certainly catch my eye now that I am a photographer. I shot this picture (above) on Monday and composed the frame so that there was not a hint of what the subject was. The second frame, (below) shows you that it is actually a four-storey protective wrap-around on a construction site. And don't be fooled by the blue sky. It' s still winter here and while the temperature was a mild 12 Celsius, the wind was icy!

I'm startin' to feel at least SOME of your cool air here, thanks to this post!

Gonna show my ignorance, here---12 Celsius, what's that in Fahrenheit, around 44? Either way, it beats the crap outta my 104 Fahrenheit! Which really would sound much better in Centigrade---I mean, Celsius!

I've never seen a construction site wrapped up like that even on the coldest days.

Is that for protection from the elements or for safety?

Looking at the first photo, I couldn't figure out what it was for the life of me.

You'd have definitely fooled us had not you shown the full picture.

Is it checkered protective wrap or windows peeping out ?

@Bruno:Ha Ha.. You are right. Fahrenheit does look dangerous. :)

Cheers !!

It puts me in mind of our tablecloth.

With the first picture I thought it was a close-up of a lawn chair of some sort (those folding ones that seem to collapse on you at inopportune times? As if there is an opportune time for a folding chair to fold in on you).

It's actually quite festive for a construction site.

Construction sites of buildings here are routinely wrapped up, so I recognized the "wrap-up" from the first shot (the scaffolding gave it away).

I noticed these wrap-arounds the first time in the Nineties in Rome. The most elaborate one I found last year in Rome, with the Camera dei Deputati (House of Representatives) on Monte Citorio all wrapped up and the image painted on the wrapping was so cleverly done, you thought you were seeing the actual building! It took me a second look to realize a was looking at painted cloth!

G'day Bruno,

It'd very very close to 54 Fahrehheit, give or take a smidgeon.

That's a lot better than 104. I'd be sitting there with an ice block on my head!

Hi Hammer,

I'm guessing it's safety - because there'd be a lot of pedestrian and vehicular traffic directly below.

They wouldn't want a lawsuit brought about by falling debris ...

Hi Cuckoo,

Thank you. I thought it would work work well, showing both views.

Yes, it's protective wrap - see my answer to hammer above.

No developer wants a lawsuit!

Hi Carol,

That's exactly what my D2 said. Great minds think alike.

Or a kitchen cloth, too...
