Until the invention of the printing press in the 15th century, playing cards were individually hand-painted works of art and could only be afforded by the very wealthy.

Have you ever tried to make your own deck of cards from paper? Usually regular printing paper is so thin that the cards are too difficult to shuffle without creasing them. And it's always a good way to try to practice hand-drawing a club or ten.
