Love Me Ten, Dear, Love Me Do

(Sorry, I Musta Had My Blue Suede Shoes On)

Yes, this is the first week of winter, but the daytime temperatures have been extremely mild. It was about 12 Celsius when I took this shot four hours ago, but as you can see, it's just a perfect afternoon here in Melbourne. Blue sky. Plenty of sun. There was no breeze early this morning and the surface of the river was barely rippling. The weather's been fairly cruel in Sydney, but we're just enjoying the sunshine. Let's hope it stays that way for the long weekend, the official start to the ski season. At the moment, the clear sky means we're going to cop a cold night - with the promise of snow in the Victorian Alps.

Thank you for the comments on my blog. We are just coming up to mid-summer now with dusk about 10.30. I understand there is a very worrying drought in Oz.

We leave for the Azores on Tuesday, and not sure how long we will be away, probably two to three weeks depending on the weather. I do quite enjoy a rough sea, but the windiest I have ever been in is a strong force 7, and that was in the Med. and that was pretty scarey.

Will take loads of photos (probably of waves) but really hope we see some whales and dolphins.

Hi Lorenzo,

No worries at all. Yes, I'm familiar with the 10.30pm dusks in the UK - Icovered Test cricket and Wimbledon for years, and loved being in England in the summer.

Have a great time in the Azores - and take care.

Looking forward to your photographs.

Ahoy for now

David

Hi David,

If your winters are 12 degrees Celsius, we are still in winter! Yesterday when we stepped out of the house it was 10 degrees!

I need some sun!

:-)

Hi Cecilia,

Only the first week of winter - but nothing's wintry when compared with Canada.

However, on Christmas Day (in the height of summer) it was 12 degrees here and highways were closed because of hail banks - we were colder than New York that day!

Cheers

David

I've been in Melbourne just once, and only for a day, en route to Christchurch. I liked what I saw, and everyone praises it so. I'm tempted to take a sabbatical there for a few months, and study in a Melbourne-school. Study journalism, maybe.

Now THAT'S a pretty picture :)

(To save a trip to an online atlas, what's the river?)

Temperatures in the 30s today! I don't miss winter right now....

Hi Shashikiran,

It really is a very beautiful city. Very green. Very sensibly designed city, with a CBD set out in precise rectangular grids.

It'd be great if you could get to Melbourne.

Cheers

Hi Brian,

Thank you for that. I'm glad you liked the picture. I guess it kinda works, giving readers an idea of what this city/ country looks like, on the other part of the world.

The river is the Yarra, and there've been quite a few shots in the past six weeks, different times of day and different light conditions.

Great to hear from you, especially the weather updates!

Cheers

David
