A burglar who stole a DVD player in China was arrested - when he went back to the same house for the remote. But the thief was allowed to go free - when police ruled the £100 DVD player was not valuable enough for them to press charges.

Zoo keepers at Ningbo Zoo, China, say they have trained a sea lion to write in Chinese. Staff say they spent three months teaching the sea lion, called Peter, to write the Chinese character representing a bull - and can stamp it with his own "sea lion" seal.

A woman called police in China after her boyfriend refused to warm up her cold feet. But the man immediately rang officers to say his girlfriend was too demanding. The policeman who responded to the call persuaded the boyfriend that it was a man's job to warm his girlfriend's feet but told the woman not to leave her feet there for too long.

Drink Up, Let’s Build A Solar Heater
A Chinese peasant has made a solar water heater - using only beer bottles and hoses. The beer bottles lie on a board in rows, all connected by hoses which allow cold water to flow through them and be heated by the sun. Ma Yanjun, a carpenter, said he invented it for his mother and he will build a solar-heated public bathroom for the village - when he has the money to buy enough beers.

The first recyclable hotel constructed from pre-built, container-like crates imported from China, stacked on each other and bolted together, is being built by a British hotel chain. Travelodge said the steel modules could be dismantled if necessary at the end of the 120-room hotel's life and moved elsewhere - and that the model could ultimately be used to build temporary hotels for sporting events or festivals.

Text Messages Create Banana Republic
Pointing out stories you may have missed. A rumour spread by text message has badly hit the price of bananas from China's Hainan island. The messages claim the fruit contains viruses similar to Sars, the severe respiratory illness which has killed hundreds of people worldwide. Producers in Hainan say the resulting price slump is costing them up to $2.5 million a day. China's Agriculture Ministry has dismissed the Sars claim as baseless. Police are investigating its source. "It is utterly a rumour," a Chinese Health Ministry official said. "There has not been a case in the world in which humans have contracted a plant virus, and there is not any scientific evidence." Hainan bananas had already been subject to rumours they caused cancer, after the banana plantations were hit by blight earlier this year.

Chinese Scientists Control Pigeon Flight
Chinese scientists have succeeded in implanting electrodes in the brain of a pigeon to remotely control the bird's flight. According to WTLV.com, the scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Center at Shandong University of Science and Technology in eastern China used the micro-electrodes to command the bird to fly right or left, and up or down. The implants stimulated different areas of the pigeon's brain according to electronic signals sent by the scientists via computer, mirroring natural signals generated by the brain, chief scientist Su Xuecheng said. It was the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world, said Su, who conducted a similar successful experiment on mice in 2005.
