The Star-Bangled Spanner

Pavement Hawker Is In Sparkling Form

You know how some writers, documentary makers and photographers dwell on the negative aspects of India? Well this is my personal crusade to show you the many stunning aspects of the country where I was born. About five months ago, I had to make an unplanned trip to Calcutta/ Kolkata for a sudden family bereavement. I'd been using my Pentax K100D for a few weeks, but I packed the camera because I wanted to capture the beauty, the colour, the character of a country I love and cherish so deeply. This is probably my favourite image from the trip. It was taken on a humid, hot night when the Diwali flies were swarming all over me, stinging my head, neck and arms (who said Diwali flies can't bite?) but I was unwavering in my concentration, even though I had rivulets of perspiration running down my face. I shot about a dozen frames of sparkling wares at a roadside stall near the New Market - and then I saw these bangles, glittering like a waterfall of gemstones. Stay tuned for more images of India ....
