The Star-Bangled Spanner

Pavement Hawker Is In Sparkling Form

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

You know how some writers, documentary makers and photographers dwell on the negative aspects of India? Well this is my personal crusade to show you the many stunning aspects of the country where I was born. About five months ago, I had to make an unplanned trip to Calcutta/ Kolkata for a sudden family bereavement. I'd been using my Pentax K100D for a few weeks, but I packed the camera because I wanted to capture the beauty, the colour, the character of a country I love and cherish so deeply. This is probably my favourite image from the trip. It was taken on a humid, hot night when the Diwali flies were swarming all over me, stinging my head, neck and arms (who said Diwali flies can't bite?) but I was unwavering in my concentration, even though I had rivulets of perspiration running down my face. I shot about a dozen frames of sparkling wares at a roadside stall near the New Market - and then I saw these bangles, glittering like a waterfall of gemstones. Stay tuned for more images of India ....

David,

This is beautiful. How amazing is the art of India. Thanks for capturing some of it for the rest of us. I have been 'covered up' as the saying goes, but was hoping to write soon.

Will be in Boston for a week, as of Wednesday, perhaps the last such trip, barring the graduation trip next month. Busy times but good ones.

david:
that was a great picture.
talking of bangles,we had a function at home on sunday wherein we had called the bangdiwala(one who sells bangles) to display his wares and offer them to our invitees.needless to say,his counter experienced the maximum rush followed by the palmreader cum astrologer.
mohd hussain is a specialist in lac bangles and handicraft items.he is quite business savvy and carries his business card with india mobile and uae mobile nos!

Bangles?

Walk Like an Egyptian because it's just another Manic Monday.

And you bought one or two as well, right? I could not have resisted!

Dear Carol,

Nice to hear from you. The colours and sights of India - as you well know - are amazing. It's not always possible for a single phootograph to capture that sensation.

Have a great trip (and a safe one) to Boston. Hope the graduation goes brilliantly.

Say hi to Neil for me.

Love

David

Hi Gopal,

Nice to hear from you. The function sounds like it was great fun. I'm sure the bangdiwala had a big smile on his face.

Hey, no one in India is ever busier than an astrologer, right!

Love the fact that he has mobile numbers listed for two countries!

Must make sure that I get to Mumbai on my next trip. We have many close friends there.

Take care

David

Hi Bart,

Hit the nail on the head, man. Hole in one.

I should have thought of the `Walk Like An Egyptian' connection'.

You won that round. Convincingly.

I was just starting to wonder why I hadn't heard from you in a few days. Glad all is well. Hope you noticed you are climbing the ladder in Aussiejourno's Weekly Blog Awards.

Keep smiling

David

Hi Deborah,

Hammmm. Let's just say that I have a recessive retail-therapy gene!

Either that, or my photography capture-the-moment gene overwhelms the urge to buy what I photograph.

Which is a good thing when I photograph things like a Ferrari F1 racing car, I guess!

Happy blogging and do stay in touch.

David,

What beautiful churis! I love wearing these, and I have boxes of them here at home. Well, not this elaborate but nice ones anyway.

cheers,

Cecilia

Hi Cecilia,

Maybe I've just never noticed them before, but I've never seen churis this elaborate.

They were a spectacular sight that night, lit only by the naked bulb in the open-air stall.
