Try picking my most popular shot

Close-up of a building facade, Whitehorse, Yukon. IMAGE COPYRIGHT: DAVID McMAHON

Some of my blog friends would remember this unusual image, shot while I stood mid-stride (yep - the things we do for art!) across a pedestrian crossing on a September afternoon in 2008 in Whitehorse, capital of Canada's gold rush Yukon region.

So I guess it would come as no surprise that this is among my most popular images. But if you wanted to skim quickly over my top dozen and a half photographs, all you have to do is click this link on my Red Bubble site. You'll see square thumbnails of my most-visited images, all on a single screen.

I'd be delighted if you could leave a comment on this blog post, saying which ones you think have attracted the most views on Red Bubble - which is an online art and photography gallery that is free to join.

When you've had a look, let me know what you think. But if you're wondering about the answer, this image has attracted by far the most views, with this image about 700 views behind, and this one a couple of hundred clicks behind in third place.

PS: Yes, I've been away a long time. But it's always great to push the door open and see who's here!

Wonderful to see your comment, Sylvia. It's been a busy seven months or so since I last posted on the blog, but I will try and be as regular as I possibly can.

Thank you for your good wishes. Yes, the family are well. A few big celebrations right across the clan this year!

good to see you david...will jump over and check them out but wanted to say hi

Great to see you here, Brian - you have been such a great supporter of my work for such a long time.

Thank you for visiting!

Brian Miller said...

how am i supposed to choose just one...love the bridge at night...the kung fun panda shadow...the chain fence foreground...and the one just beneath it...

david mcmahon said...

If (and it's a VERY big if) I had to pick a personal favourite, Brian, I think it would be the symbolism of the Opera House with the metal chains arcing across the foreground.

Or maybe the simplicity of the cheap little plastic heart-shaped slinky ....

Or ..... hmmmmm ......

But the Opera House and metal chain was shot in bad weather, heavy cloud and no colour in the sky. So in terms of existing degree of difficulty, that's probably my own personal choice.

it's a great photo. nice to see you here again.

And a very sincere thank you, Ellen, for dropping by and taking the trouble to comment.

It's wonderful to see old friends.

I haven't peeked at your answers yet, but my first guess is the Kung-fu shadow.

Welcome back, David!

david mcmahon said...

A very good morning to you, Willow (9.40 am Sunday morning here, but still Saturday for you.)

Glad you liked the kung-fu shadow! It was one of those just-shoot-this-NOW moments!

I've never forgotten your kindness in reviewing my second novel.

Willow said...

Maybe I will look into putting photo on Red Bubble. Thanks for the tip :)

david mcmahon said...

Wonderful to hear that, Willow. Let me know if you have any questions at all.

Happy to help - but you know that!

I'm still here too, David. And, I've been waiting for what seems to have been an eternity for a post from you! Good to see you post again and hope you put a few -or a lot -more up, soon!

Hmm, strange that the aboriginal one is so popular, I wonder if they're mainly overseas hits? For me its the Indian Slippers. Very exotic, beautifully detailed and yet so simple I love it.

Great to see you again! What a nice surprise on a Saturday evening. I will bop over to RedBubble now.

Good to see you post again.
My mind played a trick on me when I clicked on Show Me The Monet to see it larger. When your name (watermark) showed up, for a moment I thought I saw that your name was upside down, but of course it is actually building's reflection that is upside down. Funny.
I love Water Under The (Sydney Harbour) Bridge. I can't choose a favorite, but I just love the drama I feel when I see that shot.

Well what do you know? Blogger has a bit of a digestive problem, swallowed numerous posts and countless comments all over the blogosphere, but in doing so, coughed up a voice from the past. ;) Great to see you, David!

Hello, David! It's so nice to see you black in bloglandia. I am partial to your slinky shot. It's luminous. I might also add that you shoot gold like no one I've ever seen. How on earth do you capture it so well? You've also inspired me to create a Red Bubble site. I've only posted a few shots, but that's the point, right? To only upload the images we're proudest of. Thank you once again for inspiring me, David!
Warmest wishes--
Kathleen

Favourite shot? Well, hard to say...your tricks with colour fascinate-I loved your Alaska posts, your confrontation with the elk or moose? From Bubble...the bridge I think.

Please don't go away again. XX

Hi Savannah - I thought my re-appearance might surprise all my old friends.

It's just been a very busy time, professionally. Hence the lull!

David said...

Thank you for the welcome, Jeni. Great to see your comment.

I will try and maintain a regular blog presence!

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. Much appreciated!

David said...

Hi there, Baino - I'll check out the stats and let you know.

So glad you like the shot of the Indian slippers. It's not often we get to see gold footwear for men.

David said...

Sandy, I'm so glad my re-appearance was a surprise.

It's been a very busy time, the past eight months. But I've often felt the "push" to return to the blog, only to be thwarted by time constraints.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

David said...

Thank you, Scrappy, for that great comment.

Interesting that both shots that caught your attention had water and reflections as the central theme.

That Central Park shot was the result of turning round in curiosity (just in case!) as we hurried to the Strawberry Fields memorial.

Delighted that you liked the shot of the harbour bridge, too!

David said...

Hilary, my very talented friend - I just KNEW I'd see a comment from you and I'm so delighted to see this.

Thank you for the very warm welcome.

The long silence was only caused by time pressures, nothing more. It's been a busy year, work-wise, and lots of wonderful family celebrations too!

David said...

Kathleen - wonderful to see you again!

I'm delighted that you are on Red Bubble. Please let me know where I can find you (a link or RB name would be great) so that I can follow your work.

Waiting for that link!!!!!

The gold shoes involved a lot of luck, because the shop lighting was very low. Harsh light would have made it much more difficult.

David said...

So very kind of you, Sylvia. You and so many other friends have given me such a warm welcome.

I'm glad my Red Bubble images are bringing you pleasure. I have to say, having a camera in my hands is such a wonderful feeling.

David said...

Great to see your top three, RuneE

And a couple of people on RB said that you had recommended my work. Thank you, very humbly.

Interestingly enough, the most visited image is the one of the didgeridoo dots, followed by the one of the Kawasaki motorcycle. A couple of days ago, I think the golden shoes were in third place.

I'll have to check to see the most recent results ....

David said...

Great to see you, Shrinky. Yes, I just knew the shadow of the kung-fu panda would appeal to your intensely creative spirit!

How is the rest of the Shrinky-clan? Well, I hope. Must visit your blog and catch up with all your adventures.

How's that novel going?

David said...

Dear Maggie,

So good to see you here. And so wonderful to receive such a warm welcome. Please pass on my best wishes to Sir Edward as well.

You in particular have been in my thoughts several times during my six-month break from blogging. I have often thought of your health and sent prayers and strength your way.

I'm so touched that a) you took the trouble to buy my second novel and b) that you enjoyed reading it.

David said...

Hi there, iMac

I'm so glad you liked Stroke Of Luck. The title says it all - it really was a stroke of luck, because I was walking away from the bridge, having photographed a beautiful winter sunrise that daubed summer hues across the horizon ....

And then I saw the rowers!

Thumbelina said...

I'm guessing the moccasins and the twin towers at KL - but I'm biased on them since I have friends in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. ;0) Never been but I have seen the photos!
Good to see you raising your head above the parapet now and again. Hope all is well with the clan and I'm still here, behind the door, but not opening it any more. Just ready to say hi and have natter with whoever comes in!
Right - I'm off to see the REAL answers now! Good to see you mate.

Oh - the chain with the opera house in the background? A real fave of mine. Different.
Right. Defo off to check the real answers to what's popular....!

Oh my goodness. . . how in the world can anyone choose just one? I just started taking photos in November with my Canon Rebel T1i. I have been posting the pics on my blog. It is certainly a work in progress. I love ALL of you shots!!! Most impressive is that the shots you post are straight out of the camera with no cropping or post-edits. I'm so not that good, but I take inspiration from photographers like you!! WOW!!! Thanks for sharing them!

Thank you, Regina

It's good for the soul to see comments from old blog friends welcoming me back. Thanks so much for dropping by!

david mcmahon said...

Dear Moannie,

Thank you for your very kind words. Yes, I have been very prodigal since my last post - but as Saz must have told you, it's been a very busy time professionally.

In addition, there have been some family milestones here and interstate as well, so spare time has been (very happily) allocated to other members of the McMahon clan.

I am now a wedding photographer and I hope to be busy once winter is over. Will keep you posted.

I remember ``talking'' to you around the time your blog disappeared temporarily and telling you how devastated I was that your wonderful treasure trove of writing might well have been lost to us, your greatest fans around the world.

From memory, Saz told me when your blog was resurrected and I said that I would accordingly give thanks by making a piligrimage to Land's End or John O'Groats!

david mcmahon said...

Great to see you, Thumbelina - yes, I do remember that you weren't posting any more (and the reasons why) but that you were still visting old friends.

I am so glad that I'm on your to-visit list. Hope the family is well.

david mcmahon said...

Delighted, Thumbelina, that the Opera House shot is your choice.

Funny thing is, the most popular shot has had three times as many views as the one of the chain and the Opera House.

As of the weekend, the Opera House shot had about 650 views and the most-viewed image - the didgeridoos - has had more than 1,800 views. It is followed by the motorcycle shot (about 1,100 views) and the golden slippers on the verge of 1,000 views!

david mcmahon said...

Many thanks for those very kind words, Amy.

If I had to choose one shot, I'd say the one of the Opera House, because it was shot in ``non-photographic weather''.

It was a grey, dull evening, just before sunset. It had rained just before I took the shot. There was no dusk colour in the sky at all.

The sky was grey, the water was grey. Even those beautiful white-tiled arcs of the Opera House looked grey.

Then, as I sat waiting for a ferry, I took on the challenge of composing an image that embraced all that grey. So in terms of degree of difficulty, I'd say that would be the shot for which I really worked the hardest.

But it's the one of the didgeridoo dots that is my most-viewed image on Red Bubble. It has been viewed more than 1,800 times - almost three times as often as the shot of the chain and the Opera House.

Good luck with your photography. Just embrace the task, accept the fact that you will make mistakes, but that you will get better by leaps and bounds if you learn to be discerning about the quality of your work.

If ever I can help you (or indeed any blogger) in any way with advice, or a constructive critique, you know exactly where to find me!

Hi David, Welcome back. It was nice to see you pop-up on my sidebar.

As for the photos, I have to say the first one I clicked on was the dinosaur in the window to have a better look, but I think the gorgeous orange sunset is my favorite.... or the shoes, or, or, or.... They're all wonderful.

Cheers, jj

david mcmahon said...

The story of the orange sunset is a very poignant one, Joanna.

A town called Marysville was just being wiped off the map, around the time I shot that sunset. It was the day of the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009 - which claimed 173 deaths in Victoria, my home state.

Ironically, the sunrise that day had been amazing, and the sun's final salute before dipping across the horizon seemed to empathise with Victorians as we (slowly) began to realise the horror.

Eight days earlier, I had photographed a bushfire racing across a valley not far from where we live.

PS..... I love your *Vivid Colour* selection best...... though its difficult to pinpoint just one.

I'm doing fine. Thank you for thinking of me!

Re your comment to Joanna and Marysville.
I remember that too (on the news). Very poignant.
Any updates on how Victoria is now and the residents of those areas that were lost? We get no coverage now of course as it is no longer "newsworthy", but I for one am interested in how things are a couple of years on (as I am about Haiti and Japan!)
Any links? Ta chuck! :)

Hi, David. Welcome back. Love those Aboriginal dots on the didgeridoos. Maybe it's because I marvel at the way vibrantly colored art seems to arise in desert places. That certainly goes for the Native art here in the American Southwest.
