The Horn Of Africa

Officer, There's A Rhino In This Building

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

You never know what you're going to see next, here in Melbourne. This rhino is lifesize, lifelike but not dangerous at all. It's made of fibreglass and is an eye-catching sight because it protrudes out of the first-floor wall of an office building in Caulfield. This was a hard shot to frame, because I wanted the best angle, as well as the realism of the "animal". I took two frames and decided to post this one on my blog because the colours of the adjacent wall complement the rhino perfectly. Would you call that good animal instinct?

:) Unique for sure!

I've a cousin who was a professional hunter most of his life and the walls of his hallway are covered with antlers :)

Delightfully eccentric! I only wish you could have taken a photo of the rest of it on the other side of the window.

Sounds like you used your head - as you considered how to frame the Rhino's head. Just goes to show - two heads are better than one.

Interesting photo...I can't imagine whereabouts you found a rhino on a wall!

Hi Isadora,

When I was very little my Dad had a friend who was a hunter - and his tiger skin used to scare the lfe out of me!

Thanks for visiting and do keep in touch

Hi Lin,

The wall on the other side was much darker, so you wouldn;t really have been able to see as much detail!

Hi Wendy,

Very funny comment! His hide's a lot thicker than mine, though!

Hi Melissa,

Well, you;re right. It's not the most common sight, is it? But I do keep my eyes peeled!

Since it was made of fibreglass, you might say the animal was extinct :-)

I especially liked the matching of the colours.

Ouch! The floodlight enclosure is in the way !! Distracting!

Hi Runee,

Ah, nice quip there. Yes, there used to be fibreglass figures alongside, of John McEnroe and Michael Jordan, too.

Glad you liked the colours.

Do keep in touch

Hi Sri Gopalan,

That is a hilarious comment. I wondered if anyone would notice the floodlight.

Not only did you notice it, you threw in a nice one-liner as well!

Here in Canada, hunters like to expose their moose heads... let's just say it's not my kind of decor...

You did take a good shot of it. Is there any particular reason why they decided to put the rhino up there?? Art?

Rhino envy here. The wildest things I got to see here are backsides of plastic Santas caught by window sashes (the Juletide equivalent of half a witch attached to a pole around Halloween).

Nice angle. I don't know that I have anything funny to say about this photo now, everyone else has said it! :) But a good shot at this game.

Cheers,

David

Wow the rhino looks real.

That's fascinating, David! Good to know the Rhino is only fiberglass. There's a steak house in town that has lots of animal heads on its walls for decor. Not sure if they are real or fake but Texans love their trophies.

Peace!

Hi David, If I dont get a chance to visit you again before I leave to Oz, I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas! Hope you have a good one!.

Around here the wall decor doesn't get more complicated than a rack of antlers off a deer!

Great photo.
