In Gourd We Trust

What's Green And Red And Incredibly Juicy?

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Yesterday was a beautiful summer evening here in Melbourne. There was a stack of cold watermelon slices just waiting to be devoured. It was about 8 pm and the sun was still shining. But I've got my hand up like a policeman. Hold off the watermelon, guys. Everyone's got their eyebrows raised. "I've simply got to photograph it first," I explain candidly. That's when the rest of my family start the synchronised eye-roll. You know the one? Yep, that's it. Photography first, then we eat the watermelon. Let's get our priorities right.

Just beyond the computer monitor which a moment ago displayed your beautiful photographs of yummy goodness, is the view out my kitchen window.

At least eight inches of snow and more coming. It's hard to wrap my head around, to be honest.

Shouldn't really be festive but the red and green works perfectly this time of year!
Cheers

Summer - green (red!) with envy. All juicy.

I had a Christmas greeting from a colleague in Sidney some years ago saying he was going to the beach before the celebration.

We had twenty cm of snow.

Great shot, David! I am SO familiar with that eye-roll, too. Mind you, it does seem to have progressed from the eye-rolling to, "Mom, you've gotta get a picture of this!"

Sounds very familiar."Were's the food?" "Mom's still photographing!" *eyeroll*

Some of my friends are by now so well trained, they will push their cup of coffee right under my lense to take a picture, before they dare to take a sip. ;-)

Ah, the synchronized eye roll. I know it all too well. May I share something that has helped me? When they make those faces and ask silly questions like, "Is this for your blog?" I find it quite therapeutic to mumble an almost inaudible "Peasants!" under my breath. Try it. You'll find that it restores balance rather nicely. ;-)

I'm in the same weather system as Kimberly. She's just on the other side of the Great Lakes. I wonder if she can see me waving from here.

Looks so good and nicely displayed as I am looking out the window at snow and watermelon reminds me of my love of summer.

David, you really know how to hurt a guy who would like a slice right now, don't you?
Have you held any seed spitting contests yet? Teens love them.

Wow...that watermelon looks pretty tasty. I know that eye roll all too well. Audrey gets so tired of seeing the camera pulled out all the time.

We had around 4 inches or so of snow last night and today. The flakes were so pretty when they were falling.

Looks delicious!

Never mind the 'eye roll'.

Try this little experiment and then take note of the result:

1. Take a small chunk of watermelon.
2. Drop it into your glass of red wine.
3. Wait a couple of minutes.
4. Remove watermelon chunk.

NEVER EAT WATERMELON AND DRINK RED WINE AT THE SAME TIME!

'Eye roll' will be replaced hurriedly by 'bog roll'.

Yum! I'm so jealous. My five year old doesn't understand that it isn't watermelon season here. Almost every night he asks if we have some!

Ah, a man after my own heart! :) And meanwhile, I'm looking forward to cold weather!

Of course you need to photograph such an awesome picture before they get eaten!
