Astern Appraisal

Gee, The Navy Puts Up With A Lot Of Ship

A $600 million Royal Navy aircraft carrier had to turn back two days into a mission - after its fridge broke down. HMS Illustrious, complete with hi-tech weaponry, was heading for the Indian Ocean with nearly 1,000 crew on board when it returned to port yesterday. A fault was located in the giant fridge so the captain set course for Portsmouth, where refrigeration experts were waiting to start the $20,000 repair.

I agree with Nessa.

I never would have thought a fridge being something that could cripple an aircraft carrier.

"Fridge over troubled waters." You slay me! :-)

Mmmmm. Just got to eat! An army travels on it's belly, and so does a Navy, so it seems. Unless you give them fishing poles.

I'm trying to imagine what a $20,000 fridge would look like...

Oh goodness more embarassment for us Brits. To think that in 1760- odd i think - HMS victory was built for £60,000, the whole ship. They didn't have a fridge though. They managed perfectly well, how pampered we all are nowadays.

one must never underestimate the importance of a fridge.

Hey, having lived on ships just like that one and bigger, I'll tell you that one critical thing in keeping those folks working and happy is their chow. You don't mess with that. And they eat WELL. Feeding 1000 people three times a day id a CHORE. If the walk-ins don't work, ya gotta pack it up.

These posts are wonderful David, and your footnotes make them even better, but when you add everyone's comments into the mix - it's absolutely priceless!

When something goes wrong it goes wrong Big Time. Like in our household!

The kitchen staff must have been pleased.

Think ya' got EVERYONE with the "Fridge Over Troubled Waters" line---even made ME laugh, and I have NO class!

Y'know---maybe you should take-up this WRITING things for a living, you know, write a book or two!

(Now that's DRY humor! Not very witty, I admit---but DRY!!! One of these days, I'll have to buy one of those books! And maybe even get around to READING it---as soon as I find "a round-tuit" that's for sale!)
