Please answer today's question on your own blog, any time until next weekend. Just link to this blog (or to this post) so I can follow the progress of the discussion.

The question is: Have you ever broken a New Year's resolution?

(Wow, I'm the first commenter!:)

Well, this shouldn't be hard to answer for anyone. Of course, even if someone's a saint they're still likely to have broken a New Years resolution. A Mark Twain says:
New Year's Day… now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.

But I like the quote:

G. K. Chesterton
The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Unless a man starts on the strange assumption that he has never existed before, it is quite certain that he will never exist afterwards. Unless a man be born again, he shall by no means enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Anyway, enough rambling! :) That's my answer: of course!

Hi Dave,I think if we are honest we have all, at one time or another, broken our new years resolutions.Over the last few years (now were older) neither the wife or I make any resolutions, that way there is nothing to break anymore.

Hi David,
It's ITLT and I've changed blogs so please update your roll.
I don't make resolutions...or shall I say I make different ones every day.
I also reserve the right to change my mind when the mood has passed.
So yes, and no to your question.

Hi there, to answer the question...yes, of course but then it wasn't that much of a resolution...more of a "I should".
Thanks for visiting and commenting of one of my blogs "Nostalgia"

I have a post in mind regarding the fallacy (for me) of NY resolutions. I've had years where I've created some seriously and some years frivolously. I'll be sure and link back when I post.

I am afraid I've never made any New Year's resolutions! So I've never broken one either.

I'm like reader wil, I don't believe I have ever made any, if I did it must have been way back in my early teens. That's been too long ago to remember.

hehehehehe...I think the real question is....have I ever *kept* a NY resolution....

Have I ever kept one would be a better question

I have no good story to tell for this one, I don't break my resolutions because I don't make them. If I need to do or change something I just go ahead and do it whatever the time of year.

Some years ago I made 3 resolutions which I didn't keep. One in particular saddened me as i vowed to visit a neighbour who was in a care home for the elderly. On one particular day I had a great feeling of guilt as I hadn't visited for a while...so I went straight to the home. Her condition had rapidly deteriorated sine the last time I had visited her. I sat with her and held her hand. She died later that night. I know she knew I was there. We had many good years together as neighbours and friends, this is what I focus on. After feeling such guilty pangs for so many months I now do not make deep resolutions, just try to live a better life each day.

I think, to be honest, a more pertinent question for me would be "have you ever kept one?"... Self discipline and routine are not my strong points!

Have i ever? You mean have I ever KEPT one?

PRH said...

Hope you are feeling better David...the question should be asked....

Have you ever NOT broken a New Years Resolution?

The my answer would be YES....your way it's also YES....

Now I'm confused!
