Whose hairstyle is better, buddy?

When I first saw this mural in Manhattan, I was only mildly interested - but when a passer-by appeared, I knew I had an extra perspective. I had to work quickly to take the shot, because as you know, New York can get very crowded and a clear field of vision can swiftly change.

From memory, this was shot in the vicinity of the Empire State Building. It was fairly late in the evening, but because we were there in summer, the light was still strong enough for me. Only just strong enough!

I covered up the head of the visitor and you are right it makes it so much more interesting to see someone checking out the artwork.

This type of work in public places always intrigues me - did the artist have to obtain permission from the city? If so, did he have to present to officials a sketch or small scale painting, and if he did, why would said officials (whom I always picture as staid, austere men in black suits) give their approval for such as this?

And if the artist does not get permission from the city officials, how does he get away with painting it, especially in a huge city like New York, where surely policemen patrol the area regularly?

I'm one of those people who absolutely loves graffiti...the more the better in my opinion. It really brightens up dull buildings. (I don't like the obscene or destructive type naturally)
