Mug Shot

Has Someone Been Using Ceiling Wax?

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Here's a couple of shots I took with a Pentax K10D, an updated version of the K100D that I own. I was sitting at my desk at work and took this shot, focusing on the rim of my dark blue coffee mug. Then I reversed the focus, trying to get a clear shot of the surface of the water in the mug. I was pretty impressed by how clearly I could see the reflection of the ceiling panels and the fluourescent lighting above me.

These are just low-resolution versions of the two shots, but the high-res images are pretty impressive. Interesting experiment all round - but I realised later that the reflection would not have been so clear if there had been tea or coffee in the mug. And as regular readers know so well, I do not digitally enhance my shots in any way. What you see here is exactly what I shoot. Nor have the images been sharpened with the aid of a computer programme.

Its fasinating how focussing can completely change the way a snap might look. Good shots to show that... Siddharth

GooD shots!! And seriously coffee or tea wouldn't have have helped with reflection of the simple panel...... simple physics!! :)
Looks like I need to get hold of a camera now...... It's about time I started on it....

Hi Siddharth,

Glad it worked. Yep, I think it makes an interesting point of difference.

If I adhere to my schedule, I'll post your picture Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Take care

David

Hi Sam,

Thank you for your kind words. I'm so glad you liked the shots.

Maybe black coffee would have provided a true reflection as well. Must try it one day.

I'd like to see some of your handiwork when you start shooting ...

Cheers

brilliant experiment I must say.
Its a wonder you could get it this clear and vivid.
I suppose a clear juice or say apple juice would have given another perspective altogether...
are you on flickr?

Gday Pricky,

Glad you liked the pictures. It was a fun experiment.

Yes, you're right - apple juice might have produced the same effect. I'll have the test it out one day.

No, I haven't (yet) put my images on Flickr. Once I've finished this novel, however, I'll definitely do so.

Thanks for dropping by and taking the trouble to leave a comment.

Cheers

Tut tut - you creative types, honestly! Aren't you supposed to be working - lol. Great shots David.

Hi Papoosue,

Gotta love it when you get called creative - especially by someone as wonderfully creative as you, Papoosue.

Photography is work, I guess. I'm a fortunate soul to have such a lot of fun.

Take care and don't forget about your revision!

Keep smiling

David

Two points to make, David...

1) Why is the K10 an updated version of the K100? Most updates generally result in larger model numbers!

2) The first shot looks like the Twin Towers! Your mug has all the 9/11 answers in it! Is it too late? Did you finish the mug of coffee?

Hi David
What is the delay time between pressing the shutter button and the shot being taken?

Hi Brian,

1. Ah, the riddle of the week! I never thought of that - I guess they wanted a bigger logo, so they sacrificed a digit.

2. Gee, I never thought of that - I guees it is a bit eerie. Did I finish the mug of coffee? No, I don't actually drink coffee. Love the aroma of it, but prefer drinking tea or water.

I'm a cheap date - I'm the only Aussie who doesn't drink a lot of beer!

You might get a chuckle out of the post (about 7-10 days ago) about my teetotaller's guide to Alaskan pubs!

Cheers
