Mercury Rising

Melbourne Is Hot To Trot

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

So I'm thinking polar ice caps. You know, just to cool myself down. Why? Look, I'm notorious for being jelly-kneed in the heat. Yes, yes, I know I grew up in India and I should be accustomed to the heat - but I ain't. It's not even summer yet and today's top temperature is going to be 37 Celsius which translates to 99 Fahrenheit. Lawks-a-mussy, what's a lad to do?

This shot was taken at dawn this morning (it's almost 3pm Monday here, on our side of the world) and as you can see, I was very lucky with the position of the sun. That rigging you see is the distinctive cladding of the Arts Centre spire here in Melbourne, so I was in the perfect spot to get an unusual foreground.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to spend the rest of the day under a block of ice ...

I thought the photo was taken beneath a soccer goal, so I am glad you clarified that for me. It is a lovely shot, no matter where it was!

I am sorry it is so hot there. I am with you about the heat,I tend to avoid the outdoors when it gets above 85 F. Today (Monday) it is supposed to get up to 70, which is quite nice for mid-November. It is 58 now at 7:20 a.m.

The weather is one of the things I really like about living in Oklahoma. We get all four seasons, but none are usually extreme. I think we only had a couple of days over a hundred this summer, but that was cooler than the past several years have been. The harsh winters are rare, but we usually have at least one snowfall each year.

Yes, yes! It's blowy and raining here. And cold just for good measure. I'm in thermals and my legs are still chilly!

Gorgeous photo, as always.

I actually don't mind the heat if it's dry heat.

But the reason I live in Oregon is because I'm a wimp when it comes to extremes.

David,

It usually doesn't get much hotter than 100 degrees F here; does it get much warmer than that in Melbourne?

Our worst days are when it's in the 90, but the humidity is high as well. Do you have to deal with the problem of humidity as well?

We're not even into summer yet and your getting 37 degree days, Imagine what christmas will be like this year.
We had a 34 degree day yesterday and I didn't even notice it was hot. Must be something about global warming.

That is so beautiful.
Well it's 'fall/winter beginning' here and we're still in the 80's Farenheit and no, I don't know the Celsius of that.
What's cold? I forget... South Texas is nothing but heat and humidity. We have hotter than hell and kinda sorta li'l bit cooler. We might have one day of jacket'ish' weather.

You said ain't. Love it!

I love that. The pure nature of son marked with the Geometry of the modern world.

And you can always send some heat back this way. Snow is already falling here in central North America. Make it go away!
