A Streetcar Named Josiah

Passengers Have To Coin A Phase

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Melbourne is famous for its trams and it's been quite a few years since coin machines appeared on the city's fleet. Years ago, when I first came to live in Melbourne, the trams had conductors as well and in true Australian style - abbreviated words are very popular here - they were called ``connies''. This photograph was taken at a traffic intersection. Cars follow regulation traffic lights, but trams follow white traffic lights. Since we were both waiting for the lights to change, I reached for the camera, wound down my car window and hit the shutter.

Mmmmmm....I'm lost. So you have to have a coin to ride? Or do you need a ticket?

Hi, David! Glad to see you stop by West of Mars. Be sure you let me know when Book #2 comes out and I'll see how much interest I can create for you.

What you write about Australian trams, works also for the Viennese ones.

You use the coins (regular change) to buy the ticket, don't you? For the New York subway, you need to purchase special coins which you throw into a slot, which opens the turnstyle and lets you access the subway system. Since 9/11, I find those man-high turnstyles quite frightening, because you cannot flee in case of emergency. In Washington, DC you can at least jump over the four foot high turnstyle (well, having lived through that horrible day in DC, I am a bit paranoid probably, I always look for emergency exits since then). ;-)

Coins seem to be getting phased out here. Either the machines only take bills or the coin slots are taped over.

There now! I have to add Melbourne to my "places to see" list - just to ride a tram. Not to mention see "white" traffic lights.

Hi TLP,

Had to find out the answer, as I don;t use the trams, so I'd be lost like you!

Tickets can only (I'm told) be bought by coins in the slot machine inside the tram.

Hi Merisi,

Yes, we use regular coins - I didn;t know that about special coins on the subway.

Nor did I know about the turnstiles. Thanks for the info.

Our buses used to have conductors, and they were called "clippies".
