Trivia Pur$uit

Author Ian Fleming, who created the fictional spy James Bond, revealed in the early 1960s that he ``borrowed'' the name of a real-life ornithologist who wrote a book about the birds of the West Indies. Fleming later explained, "It struck me that this name, brief, unromantic and yet very masculine, was just what I needed."

There was a nice tip of the hat to this in the Die Another Day (the last Bond film to feature Pierce Brosnan in the title role and the twentieth in the official series): while in the Carribean on assignment, Bond is shown briefly picking up a copy of the original James Bond's book...

Thanks, Allan,

What a great piece of film and Bond trivia. You always bring a new perspective - thank you.

Enjoy this important week as you make the next big step.

Say hi to Tammy for me

Cheers

Hey, Dave, have you ever been accused of plaigarism?

In junior school Mum wrote some poetry. The teacher said that it wasn't her own work, told the class that it wasn't, and tore it up in front of everybody.

Then in secondary school the same thing. She wrote some poetry, the teacher got her to the front of the class, this time she had to tear it up herself.

(Actually, when she left school, she got that poem into an anthology and sent the teacher a copy! HAHAHAHA)

Well, she is doing a writing course at the moment.

In her first assignment she got 83%.

In her second, marked last week, she got 85%. But hey, guess what the tutor has written on it?

"I presume these are your own words."

Ever had this trouble?

Cos my Mum is pretty low right now and feels like giving up. I'm off to administer a head hug. Any advice you & the people out there can offer would go a long way...

Hi BTBear,

I wonder about the competence of the teacher in both those recollections.

If the teacher could not recognise a wonderful spark of talent in a pupil, how on earth could he/she ever expect to inspire any of you?

I had some wonderful teachers (or maybe that's just the way I look at life) and when Vegemite Vindaloo was first published, I sent my very first copy to my Grade Five teacher who used to do me the honour of letting me read my essays out loud to the class.

If Mum's feeling low, tell her from me: a) pretty much everyone goes through highs and lows and we wouldn't be human if we didn't; b) that she has so much talent that maybe her teachers were embarrassed.

Tell Mum to do the three Rs - relax, re-evaluate and rejuvenate.

God bless

David

Hi BTBear,

Ah, now that one is the most crucial and the most rewarding - but it comes after the first three Rs have been completed.

Keep smiling
