It Ain't Odour Cologne

Mate, I Was Really Kicking Up A Stink

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Yesterday's post of the day, Poop by any other name, really struck a chord with me. Been there, done that. Here is a segment from a post I wrote in January 2006 after doing a photography assignment for the Canadian Tourism Commission. It describes an incident I'll never forget, while I was shooting scenes like the one pictured above, in the vicinity of Tea Lake in Algonquin National Park in Ontario, Canada.

``The startling beauty is all too much for a city slicker like me. As I juggle cameras, memory cards and spare films, I am concentrating too hard to look elsewhere. So, when I suddenly get the overpowering whiff of moose dung, I look around, expecting to photograph the big animal at point-blank range. No such luck. I've stepped into a steaming pile of it and it's all over my sturdy boots like a rash. That's when I realise the truth in the old adage - what's dung cannot be undung.''

LOL! Be glad you didn't come "face-to-face", David. Moose are MEAN. And HUGE. They will step ON you. Or your car. Never, never, never hock your horn when a moose is blocking the road, either. Just sit politely and take your pictures. And pray.

Ooops. "Honk" your horn, I meant. I suppose you could go ahead and hock it, if it was worth the effort.

Love the photo and the colors of the sky. It looks dream-like.
One time I was playing in a pile of leaves and I did a somersault and then I realized I rolled head first into doggie-doo.
So, that is disgusting too.

I think he gettin' the hang of it---he's ALMOST as disgusting as ME!!!

Now, if he could just gain a hundred pounds or so, and go without shavin', and put on a go-to-hell hat---TWINS!!!

(Thank God we will never meet---murder can get you the death penalty UP HERE, too.....!)

G'day Les,

Yes, that's exactly what I was told by the locals before I set out on the drive.

Will remember the advice about the horn the next time I do the trip.

Thanks for taking care of my safety!

Hi Colleen,

It was an amazing sky that morning. It was just a palette of colours.

I should mention that I do not manipulate my shots in any way - but you probably guessed that.

There was so many shots to take that morning!

I'm with stacy on this one, your photography pulls us straight in there - it truly must be a sight to behold! (If you can avoid the moose dung!)

I'll never forget my trip to Algonquin, in 94, to hike back into the woods and canoe the lakes and fish. Wonderful time, and a moose walked through our camp at one point. I've got the pictures posted on FlickR at my site, If you're interested.

G'day animalswithopinions,

I was hoping I'd hear from you on this one. I suspected it was your mate Moosey, all along.

Why, thank you, Carol,

That is such a kind comment. I do enjoy photography and I'm lucky to be able to plan my posts around my shots and vice versa.

Hi Goddess,

Thank you, ma'am. Unfortunately, there were no Mounties there for me to photograph for your benefit!
