Monty Python’s Life Of Brine

Take It With A Pinch Of Salt

Ever tried building anything from giant blocks of salt? No? Me neither. But that is exactly how construction workers are putting up a hotel in the world’s largest salt desert, Salar de Uyuni in southwestern Bolivia. The area, which boasts native pink flamingos, 1000-year-old cacti and rare hummingbirds, is becoming a tourist hotspot. The hotel mimics other projects constructed from salt blocks. If you do go, try not to lick the walls.

FOOTNOTE: Is it bigger than the San Andreas Salt?

Hmmmm...very resourceful.
I actually have an antique figurine of Orphan Annie that is made out of a salt block.

David-

Very interesting. I love salt. Trying not to lick the walls might be hard for me.
Not quite the same but, my sister once built a castle out of sugar cubes for a school project. It was pretty cool until we all went to bed and my dog ate her homework.

I wonder if it's just as cool as the Ice Hotel in Sweden? Now there's a place I'd like to see too!

G'day SLB,

Wow - I'd like to see that. Why not give us a blog post on the figurine, with a picture?

Keep smiling

Hi Colleen,

Yep, I'm not averse to a sprinkle of salt, but I love the story of the dog eating the castle built out of sugar cubes.

That's make a great retrospective post.

As for the Ice Hotel - ultra cool, in every respect.

Hi Singleton,

I'd like to be there with my camera when the flamingos fly in!

Yeah, what happens if some smart ass sprays it with water? Not that I would try that. Just some random smart ass...
