Wattle I Photograph Next

This Is Not To Be Sneezed At

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

It is still winter here, but the golden wattle is in full bloom all over Melbourne. I shot these pictures yesterday (Friday) afternoon, but don't be fooled by the clear blue sky because it was freezing. We had hail alerts and the sky, overcast for most of the day, was a range of blue, grey and almost black with storm clouds when I shot these frames. Wattle, as you know, belongs to the acacia family - and is a hay fever trigger for some people. But it appeals to my photographic instincts, because it is like a bright yellow snowstorm, with each tiny bloom perfectly formed, like an imitation snowflake.

Fabulous shots, David! Almost makes me want to pick up the camera again. Almost.

Man! Makes my nose itch just lookin' at it! Similar to our goldenrods, I guess. Probably equally irritating to the ol' schnaze, as well!

At least it's beauty, for the pain...!

G'day Dawn

Thank you for that comment. Yes, the wattle is always a bright sign that spring is only four weeks away!

So glad you liked the pictures.

Dear Les,

I'd love to see the results of your work with a camera.

If it;s anything like your writing, it'll be wonderful.

Come on, pick up the camera .... and make sure I'm the first to know!

G'day Bruno,

I wonder if goldenrods belong to the acacia family. Off to do some research on 'em now....

We've got something similar. It covers everything in green dust.

Not as pretty as yours.

Lovely photos! *achoo* (okay, so I'm not allergic)

Yellow flowers are just great in my opinion. Just so bright and cheerful.

Interesting, I know that tree as Mimosa. In Italy, the bloom around Women's Day (8th of February or so) and are given away on the streets to women. I always wondered, if there was an insult hidden somewhere. ;-)

G'day Hammer,

Green dust? That's interesting - would that be the goldenrods that Bruno talked about ( see above) ?

Hi Merisi,

Mimosa - I;ve read about that in a lot of European literature. I wonder if it belongs to the acacia family ....

Amazaingly beautiful.
Wattle grow in the wintertime... who knew, certainly not me!
I've never seen anything like them. My green dust comes from pines... not nearly as pretty.

G'day SLB,

Yellow daisies are also profuse in our winter.

I guess anything that's frost-resistant continues to grow here in the cold months.
