Verse And Worse

Random Wit, Errant Rhyme. Not A Literary Crime

I wonder if you remember Henry Flannery
Commercial manager of the local tannery
His coffin, they said, was light as a feather
Now they reckon he’s going hell-for-leather

If Henry Flannery, deceased, is going hell-for-leather right now, it is likely because he's spinning in his grave over this poem!

Would that be Henry from the Hades Flannery's? If so, I knew him well
and there is no doubt he went to hell...the very idea of running a tannery!

Tannery Flannery flayed hides with elan,
Then would hide in the pub 'neath a big black 'n tan.
The jokers all knew to tell folk "he's out riding";
If his dam found him there, he'd receive a good hiding.
But the vicar knew just what to tell all his kin;
"Your Henry's with God, leaving you his thick skin."

His coffin was light as a linnet
Because quite simply, he wasn't in it!
His body was turned to very tough leather
Through all that tanning and the very hot weather,
So it was used to make a settee
And is enjoyed by his wife, Betty!

Henry of Hades
Forgot his shadies
Now he's as tanned as his leather
As well as light as a feather.

If his coffin was light as a feather
Perhaps the thing was made of leather

Love the other responses.

Cheers!
