Always Coca-Cola

Scotched On The Rocks

A Croatian man says he's in perfect health - after drinking nothing but Coca-Cola for more than 40 years. The 71-year-old began his Coke-only diet in 1968 after promising his mother he wouldn't drink alcohol. "I never drink anything else," he said.

FOOTNOTE: Yes, he can.

Hmm...do you suppose he knows that coca cola was invented by a pharmacist and it was a medicinal concoction that included COCAINE (hence the name coca-cola)...but anyway, as long as his Mama was proud, what does it matter?

There was a show here about appalachian families in america (really rural mountain people) and their diet consisted of junk food and soda. These are poor miner families and they showed how the babies had mountain dew in their bottles and that everywhere there drinked it in excess. They also had the highest incident of tooth decay and rot in the country as well as diabetes. Hmm

There was a documentary series in the UK (Can't remember the proper name of it) that looked into the weird and wonderful people that inhabit suburbia. There was a guy who had done up his house like something out of star trek, a family who lived like they would have done in the 40's and a woman who only lived off chocolate. She actually went out for dinner and poured a packet of malteasers onto her plate and ate them whilst everyone else had a curry!!

People are strange!!

I like drinking a Coke as much as the next guy. But, I still remember those experiments in science class that showed how a tooth, when dropped into a bottle of coca-cola, will eventually dissolve. I was appalled by this. Until I realized the experiment was sponsored by the nice people from 7-Up.
Have a Coke and a smile (unless your teeth have dissolved).

Wow, I'm surprised it hasn't rotted his teeth. Love the photos of the red benches.

Maybe it is because he honored
his mother and kept his promise.

@ Muse - I live in the area 20/20 did the show on. While the statistics on tooth decay and diabetes are mostly accurate, a very small percentage of people put soda in the baby bottles. I've lived here for 12 years and I've only seen that one time. And the term "Mountain Dew mouth" was one I had never heard.

The greater part of the problem has to do with the fact that most people do not have flouride in their water and very few have dental insurance and can't afford to go to the dentist. (I just paid $208 for the dentist to clean both my kids' teeth. Yes, $208 for cleaning.) And a number of dentists won't even take patients without insurance.

But you can find soda in baby bottles and little kids eating junk food everywhere you go. Diane Sawyer definitely skewed that report to find the absolute worst examples of poverty in Appalachia, to perpetuate the stereotype that we're all ignorant hillbillies. She claims to be from there, but Glasgow Kentucky is about as similar to Appalachia as New York is to a village in Wales.

My husband and I both have master's degrees and my children were breastfed. They drink milk and apple juice and water. They eat fruits and vegatables.

Yes, there are problems, but there are many organizations here working on solutions, which is something else Ms. Sawyer chose to ignore. My husband's non-profit organization builds houses for low-income people and has been able to house many folks who were previously homeless or living in trailers most city folks wouldn't keep their lawnmowers in.

I'd better shut up. I'm not trying to be hateful to anyone (well, except Diane Sawyer, because I used to have respect for her), just wanted to try to give a bigger picture.

Of course, my poison of choice is Coca Cola as well, but I don't drink it every day. I would if I could though. :)

sorry - I just realized that was a post-sized comment.

Well it is a sad substitute for those of us riding the sober bus ;-)
It also removes battery acid off of car batteries.
My drink of choice though...
It to me is about sugar growing up I was on whole fodds no sugar no snacking.... our neighbors Mom always was stirring up koolaid with 4 cups of sugar, we would gulp it down and spin about the new hampshire woods all day long...
Great photos and blog were you recently mentioned on NPR in the states?
