Lei Preacher

Thanks For The Garland, But Skip The Grass Skirt

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Sometimes you see tropical blooms that make you look twice because the colours are so vivid. It’s aways handy if you have your camera within arm’s reach, just to capture the scene before the blooms are whisked away.

Then you take a closer look and you realise that they’re not real flowers at all. Someone’s just about to use them for a Hawaiian-themed party. Realisation dawns slowly.

You think they must be expensive, for sure. Then your eye travels up (and so does the lens of your camera) and you realise that beauty sometimes does come at a bargain-basement price.

Just shows anything can become priceless, if you look at it in the right way... That first photo is a work of art and no mistake.

Well no matter whether real or not real and no matter how cheap, you have made a very good photo and I love those colours!

Funny thing is, these will probably hold up for years (depending on what they're made of) while the real deal will wither away in a matter of days and cost several times as much.

Go figure.

Well, you made it really clear (once again) that to make a beautiful photo you need a GOOD EYE and not a good camera (although that might help). Nice one.

LOL! You had me going, David!

They are a bit gaudy but I think that we all need a bit of cheering up at the moment. I do not think that being cheap matters.

Hope that you and your family are safe from the bush fires.

Brilliant!
Colours and photographer. :-)

All these colours are like balsam for my eyes, seeing as the weather here has turned wintry again, snow and sleet and more grey. I'd like to call out like Goethe, "More light," please!

Feasting my eyes on those lush colors is a real treat to me. I am looking out the window at a day that is rather gray in these parts.

And I am concerned about your corner of the world, David. What I heard on the radio this morning was very unsettling.

This a just the cutest post. I love it!
And thanks for the shout out a few days ago. I have just been so busy I didn't catch it.

Well they may be cheap but they're certainly pretty! :)

Those colors are breathtaking! I wonder if people in Hawaii ever get tired of the colors (real and imitation) that surround them. I should ask Cloudia!

They look an awful lot better than the silk leis that are sold in this neck of the woods!! I was sure they had to be real flowers! Maybe I am just colourstarved!

I came thisclose to buying a scarf that had those very flowers (in a pattern)on it! Arent they called Frangipangi?

The colors looked a little too too real, but at the same time very pretty. Good one.

Our news is showing the fires near Melbourne and the total drought in australia. I hope you and your are safe. MB

I thought they were flowers at first such bright colours.

So sorry to hear of the fires near you. Such a tragedy. Hope you are safe.

That first picture is stunning.

Oh! At first I was so impressed that you found real flowers that look like the ones I've seen at craft stores. Clever.

Beauty may be found in the most unexpected places, and the clever eye (which you have) finds it with remarkable frequency.

I read with dismay the news of the tragic deaths of your countrymen and women from the terrible bush fires. I will continue to keep all of you in my prayers. Be safe!

Cute post David. Nothing wrong with artificial flowers in my book.
