Mikhail Gorbachev Plays Bag Gammon

Raisa was the fashion queen, but Gorby's `bagged' the best gig.

Move over Scarlett Johansson - Mikhail Gorbachev is the new face of Louis Vuitton. The former Soviet leader is to appear in an ad campaign with Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi and French actress Catherine Deneuve. Shot by photographer Annie Liebovitz, the ads feature Gorby in a car, with an LV bag at his side and the Berlin Wall in the background. The campaign will hit magazines next month.

FOOTNOTE: I hope he's not scarred by the experience.

How's the irony of a former communist leader flogging consumables to the capitalist's?
I guess we all have to earn a buck.

Hi Handbags for Charity,

Never thought we'd see Gorby as a bag-man!

Well, I guess I am in a positive mood to-day: Gorby escaping from behind The Wall or Iron Curtain, as a symbol of capitalism winning over communism, fitting, isn't it? He should be the first to be able to take advantage of the spoils of a free society. I hope he lives well.
P.S.: As a student in Rome, I loved to carry around a smaller version of that bag, fake of course (they were sold on Via Condotti, right in front of the Gucci store, btw, among others). Last time I was in Venice, those bags were still available on the Black Market, again right under Gucci's shop window near St. Marco Square, but I now rather carry a no-name bag than a fake (the real item? Not that one, they are plain ugly, aren't they?). ;-)

Hi Merisi,

Fascinating insight, thank you for that comment. I've never been to Italy. Must make amends.
