Get Into Rugby Mode This Winter

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Now that we’re right into winter here in Melbourne and the days get continually shorter, the sport of choice is Australian Rules football. But these photos prove that Melbourne, the sporting capital of this nation, embraces just about any sport.

Rugby union is about to take my city by storm – as you can see by the larger-than-life mural at this Visitor Centre on the Bourke Street Mall. There is already a fair bit of talk about this month’s two-Test series, when the Qantas Wallabies take on Italy in the 2009 Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series.

How big are the murals? Like most rugby players, they are high and wide. This next shot, with a passer-by in the frame, should put it all into context for you.

Those are some big guys. I've never seen an Austrailian football or a rugby match, I would like to though.
My favorite basketball team won the NBA championship last night. Go Lakers! I wonder if that made the news down under?

I watched some Aussie Rules when I was last in Melbourne. Unfortunately, all those hot male bodies sorta distracted me from understanding how it's played.

Oops.

I have a friend who plays on a women's Rugby exhibition team. It would be interesting to see how your rules differ from theirs.

What I have seen of what they do is extremely physical and sometimes bone breakingly brutal... but highly entertaining. They are not daintly players and they don't hold back! It's a great sport to watch.

Neat mural.

Wow, those are really huge! Our football, the one with helmuts and pads, starts in late August. How cold does it get where you live in the winter?

That is impressive. It is really dramatic in panels that create depth and movement.

Frankly, it's the fans who scare the bejeebers out of me!

Never understood Aussie rules football, but it seems one of the most physically demanding sports around. Great mural.

Go the Wallabies !!!

Well, the All Blacks aren't plying, so of course I'll cheer for the Wallabies :-)

Though I'm not really thinking about the AB's too much at the moment, after they let the french beat them...
