I Haven't The Foggiest

Where Are You Pointing Your Camera?

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Sometimes it pays to point your camera in the opposite direction to the main attraction. This was shot about three weeks ago, during a heavy fog. I shot some images of the grey blanket that covered our wintry city.

Then, as I began walking across the pedestrian footbridge between Southbank and Flinders Street Station, I noticed that the sun was starting to break through. I looked down and had to stop immediately, to shoot this reflection of a nearby building, reflected on the surface of the Yarra River below me.

the waves and ripples take the little details and turn them into something altogether spectacular. good line too about pointing our lense away from the big event. never know what you might find.

I would have never guessed that was taken when it was foggy. Worth the other direction for sure.

What a great view. Before I read the explanation, I thought of wrapping paper around the edges of a beautiful sky. Very lovely.

I would have guessed that this was oil. Very perceptive.

What a wonderful Impressionist painting, David. I love how this is something you captured by turning your back to the protagonist.

Ciao and as usual, thanks for all this.

A stunning picture, the sun reflecting off the ripples in water always looks brighter than in the sky. Reminds me of the ripples on my blog header...

Always better to point your lens away from the big event...great advice! My first thought was liquid silver and I see from the comments, I'm not alone.

I am in my fist ever photography class! Your blog has already taught me some tricks. Today we learned about stabilizing the camera any way you can and i recalled your post on this very subject!

The reflection looks a little like an inverted Dali portrait.

David, that would make a great book cover.

That photo is beautiful. I love it. It's sort of like looking at the clouds - if ou let your vision blur you can see all sorts of things in there.
