Red-Hot Chilli Papa

Never Mind The Spies, Wot About The Spice?

Indian defence scientists are planning to put one of the world's hottest chilli powders into hand grenades – but they say the devices will be used to immobilise people without killing them. The chilli, known as Bhut Jolokia, is said to be a thousand times hotter than commonly used kitchen chilli.

FOOTNOTE: Hot to trot.

Ouch. That's gonna hurt.

Brilliant footnote.

During a dog attack, the pepper spray blew back in my face leaving the dog just amused as he chewed on my leg. That is a serious weapon.

It's difficult to imagine that kind of heat...and I do not want to ever know!

This isn't truly a "new" development. They may not have been the first, but the ancient Samurai used "pepper bombs" in close combat centuries ago. Of course, theirs were probably not quite so sophisticated.

I wonder how these grenades disperse the agent though. If it uses even a small explosive charge, there's still a chance of serious injury or death.

All the same, I think I'll pass on getting peppered. I've had some pretty intense encounters with peppers of various kinds over the years -- always accidental -- and I'm not at all inclined to find out what an intentional encounter would be like.

Little known fact: Los Alamos National Laboratories has a division working on heightening the heat factor in the peppers grown in Hatch, the chile capital of New Mexico.
