Happy Anniversary, Alaska (Love Your Colours)

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

It's not every day you get to visit a place like Alaska. When I went there for the first time in 1999, I never thought I'd be making another trip back there. It's been a huge privilege to visit the beautiful state, especially for someone like me from the Southern Hemisphere.

Since this is the first Odd Shot of the new year, I thought it would be very appropriate to salute the fiftieth anniversary of the state by publishing this photograph.

Enjoy the party, Alaska. Shall I come round and help you break the ice?

(The Odd Shots concept came from Katney. Say "G'day" to her.)

I was lucky enough to go to Alaska a few years ago and what a experience it was.

No doubt there'll be some ceremonial moose-hunting for the occasion.

Golden number plate for a golden anniversary. Very appropriate.

Interesting. Hawaii was adopted in 1959 and is also having her 50th birthday. That is also the year I was born. That means the hottest and the coldest state and the most wonderful (and modest) person all came to be in the same year -- 1959 was blessed, wasn't it?

I remember when I was in the first or second grade reading "My Weekly Reader" and all about Alaska about to become a state...we were very nearly stationed there once, but got sent to Charleston, SC instead. I've always regretted missing the opportunity.

I was in Alaska in 2007 and loved it. I'm a warm weather girl so I was so surprised that I was totally taken by the state. I hope to go back in 2010. Good photo and I never even thought to get a photo like this while I was there, I was too busy looking for bald eagles to take a photo of which I never found. LOL Have a god one.
