I’m Not Talking Through My Hat
A few days ago, I was walking across the pedestrian footbridge from Southbank to Flinders Street Station, when I noticed a strange sight. I’m accustomed to seeing black swans on the Yarra, as well as a variety of other birds.
But there was something in the water that I could not identify. It was a long way away. Was it an albino duck?
It was 100 degrees and the sun was beating down mercilessly. But I simply had to solve the mystery.
Then I realised it wasn’t a bird. Was the tide bringing it closer to me or away from me? It was hard to tell. Then, with the object about 100 metres away, the penny dropped.
It was a woman’s broad-brimmed straw hat, a familiar – and popular - piece of headgear on scorching summer days like this. But Melbourne’s breeze is capricious and very strong. Sometimes you really need to hold on to your hat in more ways than one.

LOL! You had me going with that title, David! :-)
Hoping you have a great Monday and week to follow...

You'r having a laugh with us aren't you David. Any fool can see that it's really a flying saucer.
Poor woman! I would have had to solve the mystery, too. But I would have paid for it because had my daughters been with me, they would have bugged me to no end to rescue it. (I would not have relented, but it gets tiresome sometimes!)
Lol... your shot and the comments ;-)
That would be an interesting Odd Shot as well!
Oh, what a great way to start my day! This is just terrific, David! Thanks -- and the bridge in your world is beautiful!
I have heard of tossing one's hat into the ring .. or even into the air but the river? Not before now. ;-)
It also looks like a pancake with a scoop of butter on top. (:
David,
It is your close attention to detail that makes your blog the most interesting to visit. We never know what we will see here, but can almost be assured you will include a bit of whimsy in photograph or word.
Perhaps even the mermaids have been feeling the heat, and this one was swimming too close to the surface...
Well.......the first thing I noticed was that the side of the bridge has a face that reminds me of the little men my sons use to build with those plastic
block-a-madoos(I can remember what they were called)Ha!

Gives a different perspective on the term "straw boater" now doesn't it?
Poor girl, I hope she didn't burn too badly.
Oh I'm sad that lady lost her hat. We ladies love our head gear....
You are right, it is a hat. I hope the lady missing it was able to replace it without too much hardship. What a fun adventure that hat must have been on to fly about on the warm winds and land in that beautiful blue and refreshing water.
100 degrees....I wouldn't be outside without a hat either.
Blessings to you today.
Coulda been something worse floating in the water for sure!

Your pictures are always intriguing, specially when accompanied by their background. It makes the whole thing so dramatic...Love your blog, once again.
your POTD is worth a lot of reading. Thanks.
That is a wonderful shot!
I thought it was a frisbie, David.
Are you sure you didn't chuck the hat overboard so you could take the picture?
David - is that flotsam or jetsam?
I have just been musing on the camera's eye . . . if you have a minute, you should read Reya Mellicker's essay on Photography. There is a link to it in my blog post from today.
:-))) did you take a swim???
Great bridge!!
lol - a lovely light hearted post and a window into your world.
Great telling.
100 degrees? Aren't you guys about due for some fall like weather David?
Another good post David, hope you dived in to see if she was under her hat, trying to be cool to the extream.lol.
How funny!It's actually a critter.
Love your post!
Finally can say hats off to you in the right context for the post.
Didn't you dive in and look for the woman? It could have been a mexican man even! Thrilled about POTD David, thanks. Eddie
Aloha, visiting from Holly's blog.
I once followed some mysterious tracks through a snowy field and woods to find out what kind of animal it was. Turned out to be a crumpled brown paper bag that had been carried along in the wind. How our perceptions fail and surprise us!
Hope there was no head under that hat. LOL
I really like the bridge, which looks like a face.
So I guess there's a hot-headed woman roaming around out there!
Someone said that it could have been something worse.
Like maybe a nursing pad! I swear I left a trail of those behind me on a trip in 1976 from the deserts of Arizona to the New Jersey shore.
I am so glad you satisfied your curiosity as well as ours! But I'd have far preferred the black swan...
Nice one David!
Mad hat asailing! :-)
I spotted a beautiful fresh head of radicchio floating in a Venice canal (and yes, I shot it *grin*).
Great posting, David! :)
