Sales of the Herge comic `Tintin in the Congo' have rocketed since Britain's Commission for Racial Equality claimed yesterday it was racist. The comic has reached number eight on Amazon's most popular books list.
Sad, but predictable. Like in the 80s in the States when Tipper Gore and her PMRC lobbied to successfully put those "Warning: Explicit Lyrics" stickers on music albums. They only made them more desirable to kids.
civil disobedience? Or just the same phenomenon as putting a parental advisory sticker on a record. Those always sell out. I think folks in the west are getting very tired of always being so sensitive to the idea of not offending people, particularly when people make a career out of being offended and expecting some special compensation.
As soon as I heard this on the news I thought it would hit the best-seller lists. The CRE were dumb as bricks to draw attention to it, IMHO.
I still remember books like Tintin in the Congo, Little Black Sambo, Eddie the Brave White Explorer (among many more PC books) from childhood. I never mistook them for reality, or assumed they were any reflection of the real world.

Hi FHB,
Yes,I agree. Sales were always assured once the hoo-ha started.
And yes, there are some who are always offended. Thankfully, not you or me!
Keep smiling
David
Hi Chertmeister,
Never heard of Eddie, but Little Black Sambo was one of my childhood favourites.
So was Noddy - and even those yarns have been sanitised!
Keep smiling
David
