Seeking An Extension For A Beauty Queen
A newly crowned Bolivian beauty queen has been stripped of her title after judges discovered she had worn fake braids during a pageant celebrating Aymara Indian fashions. Mariela Mollinedo was crowned Cholita Pacena 2007, an annual event featuring the elaborate style favoured by La Paz's Aymara women, known as "cholitas." But judges discovered too late that Mollinedo's long black braids - an essential part of the cholita look - were extensions.

Isn't that hair-ism? Like, if she had been bald, would she be less beautiful?
*sigh*
thats not fair...cos true beauty doesnt mean having long hair or any hair at all...its abt the personality isnt it?
Keshi.
With you on that one, Brian,
Surely they didn't judge here just on her braids. And if they did, that would be a pity.

Hi Keshi,
Aye, true beauty is what comes from within.
Maybe the organisers should be upbraided!

Ummm... imagine if they took crowns from former other Ms/Miss's for fake breasts?
Hi Steph,
I might have to call in some research on that!

How pathetic, what about if she had false teeth, or a glass eye? I bet they don't outlaw boob-jobs!
Would definitely be hair-ism and subject to a lawsuit in this country, as in a recent case where a flight attendant was required to remove her extensions and, thereby, braids!!!
However, hair-ism is only one end of the spectrum. Should we go with too much scrutiny or too little, as in another recent case where a beauty queen got to keep her crown despite some 'exposure' on a website. Would this have anything to do with true beauty?
Hi Carol,
I agree with you entirely.

Hi Carol (McFarlane)
Just had to distinguish between you and Carol Cooper (above). Didn't know about the flight attendant. Thanks for pointing that out.
Agree with you about true beauty. That's the litmus test.
